In terms of accuracy it is probably not bad. But it is not a comparable product. The others are purpose built with NMEA outputs ready for network integration whilst the MPU-9255 is just the sensor and a few components to interface it to a bus.

I'm using this setup for my system and it works good enough for radar and ARPA. The compass sensor is rather equal to the MPU-9255 I suppose. See: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1495725
Heading data is sent by 2 Hz but OCPN is receiving at 1 Hz, probably due to 1 Hz system bus on the Simrad IS15 system. On a low speed sailing boat the 1 Hz update is apparently sufficient.

Hi,

after I read the manuals and the points on the github sites I´m a little bit confused.
I want to use the plugin with a pi (Raspian Jessie - it´s a like ubuntu) and a navico broadband 3g Radar.

In the informations on one side is written that I can use the ubuntu ppa packages and on the other side I found the information that there are two patches and I´ll have to build oc from source with the paches.

What is now right? And how I build it from source with the patches if this is the right way?

Both are correct. You can use the plugin from the PPA package, but there are two patches to OpenCPN 4.8.0. If you use it with unmodified pre-compiled OpenCPN 4.8.0 you will get some corruption of AIS target popups and sometimes the entire OpenCPN screen will get corrupted. Also the popups may stay on screen to long.

A workaround is to set the refresh time of the PPI windows to '1' and if that still gives corruptions that you don't like you can choose not to use the PPI windows (= the separate radar only displays) at all.

So you can wait for Dave/Pavel to fix this in OpenCPN 5.0 (one bug has been fixed and one is waiting for merge, see https://github.com/OpenCPN/OpenCPN/pull/887) or you can compile it with the patches I suggested, or ask someone here to compile it for you for RPi Jessie.

BTW you're probably better off asking this in a Navico radar thread, this thread generally only concerns itself with Garmin radars.

The 'Navico' plugin is in the process of being rewritten to also handle Garmin radars. At the moment we have support for Navico BR24, 3G, 4G, Halo and Garmin xHD.

We're porting the gradar_pi code over to the new plugin, but now we need some help from someone with a working Garmin HD radar. We have one individual with a Garmin HD, but his radar is broken.

So if you have one, please come and help us. Ping us either here or at https://github.com/opencpn-radar-pi/radar_pi/issues/1.

As long you're talking about broadband/digital radar types it would be possible I suppose.
The new plugin, radar_pi, is now adapted to facilitate programming of other scanners than Navico and Garmin.
Apart from program coding also backward engineering for the actual radar type is needed. For that you need a functional radar system and a "record" program like Wireshark.
If there is anything that would interest you all efforts are for sure appreciated.

As with Hakan, I can confirm that on a slow sailing boat that 1 hz from an old Raymarine Fluxgate Compass on an original Autohelm ST4000 Wheelpilot (24 years old) is just adequate. When you turn there is lag time in aligning the radar overlay on the chart, but when you are steering straight it is actually pretty good. This Fluxgate uses nmea0183 which is being converted to nmea2k by a Raymarine Converter, the n2k signal is then injected from the n2k bus into the Radar interface Box via a Simrad connector (see B&G diagrams).

I’ve tried searching and I understand this is now supported in the plug in, but is it in the main release or do I need to install another file.

Hi KevinWalters and welcome.

The Halo radar scanner is supported and it's used by others on this forum. I haven't' tried it myself since I'm using a Navico radar scanner. The radar_pi plugin supporting different radar types is still under development but it's able to use apart from some minor issues. If you're able to build from source it's not a problem.
