Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Matt
Neptune Gear

I don't know if you have the same problem as mine, but Power surges such as turning on the Microwave or Coffee pot wipes my fluxgate compass out. Panic situation at first, till i figured out what was causing the blackouts. I use an inverter for My computer. When i turn on the Microwave, i lose the Fluxgate and the Dashboard compass heading.
It might be a power problem. Could be something Intermitent kicking off and on.

A long time ago i had a old woodfreeman auto pilot model 11 chaindrive in another boat, when the bilge pump went off it would go starboard 15 degrees.

Good Luck
Jim

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Question Dave,
While I have time on the PC, in searching around, I found this:
Should I have a restricted network when I look at my DHCP service?
I'm having some kind of security token issue with the forum so can't attach my screen print, but when I invoke services from the run window, and look at DHCP properties, the executable path is:
C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted

Is this right?
Matt

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

In trying to get to the ethernet port, I find that all I'm allowed to get is a WAN miniport PPPOE. this appears to be a dialup port provided by Microsoft. Does anybody know how to get around it and access the ethernet port directly in Windoze 7?

Thanks, Boris

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

EUREKA!
Cindy and I just finished our happy dances!
We have BOTH our Win 7 PC's running gradar!
Please don't get upset, as Windows 7 is new to both of us, but I was fumbling with solutions from numerous searches, and somehow ended up on a new-to-me page to turn on/off the firewall. Unlike XP, Win7 has two separate firewalls, one for public and one for private networks. I had previously found and disabled the private network firewall, but didn't see the radio button for the public network until just now. Clicked "disable" and VOILA!
Cindy is concerned about turning off the public firewall, as her intent is to still use the internet with the Nav PC, and is working to rename the public network to home or private to keep the public network firewall enabled, or invoke some firewall rules, but at long last, we're splashing red!
YAY!

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Matt....

Yay Indeed !!!

I don't know Win7 internals either, so this has been a learning process.

Seems to me that you should be able to set up some exceptions for the external firewall to allow gradar multicast reception. I hope so.

Lets have some pix when you can.

And happy dance again!

Congrats
Dave

I've had similar experience when starting to use Win7, but its long ago so I did not remember it.

Windows 7 use:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

Expand "Home or Work"
Turn on/off Network Discovery
Turn on/off File and Printer Sharing
Turn on/off Public Folder Sharing
Media Streaming
File Sharing , set encryption
Password protected Sharing on/off
Homegroup on/off

Expand "Public"
All very similar.
---Normally you should use "Public" when you are on an insecure network, do not use "Home"
==
I forgot to add that you can see or set "Public" or "Home" from this location
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center
Look for "Public" or "Home" under the types of connections. Click on it for changing and description.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

It seems to me that this is an internal, hardwired setup between two computers and you should be able to set two Win7 computers to "Home" and enable the proper sharing and the UPC Multicast should pass through ok with the proper sharing enabled.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Here is a solution to running GRadar 1.3 under Windows 7 by configuring the Windows Firewall to disregard the network adapter in which the radar scanner is connected. The attached PDF document describes the problem, cause, and solution.

Sorry having problems uploading large file. Stay tuned while split into two files.

SOLUTION: One solution would be to turn off the Firewall for Public Networks but this is not a good solution for PCs which will be used to connect directly (not using routers with firewalls) to the Internet using Wifi in public places like marinas. The best solution is to customize the Public Profile on the Windows Firewall to disregard the network adaptor that is being used for the radar scanner
Forgot you wanted to connect to internet via wifi, but now I am wondering why the Radar is on "Public".... I guess you can't log into it and direct it to a "Home" setup.... maybe its expecting to see a server or router with DNS rather than the more informal home network?

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Rick...

Garmin chose a (fixed) multicast address which is in the "public" network space. Dunno why. So Win7 sees it as a public exposure.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

I wish we could. That was our first approach, but even googling the issue, there was no solution to redirecting to 'home'. Possibly something in the registry, but we don't need to do it that badly. We eschew messing with the registry. Anyway, we got it working, drilling some small holes in the firewall for gradar to peek through.....After all, I am a mechanical guy.....Every problem looks like a nail when the only tool you have is a hammer.....

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Matt/Helmsmatt;

How did you set up the broadband/ethernet channel in Windows 7? Were you able to directly use the ethernet controller or did you use a WAN miniport?

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Boris,
On both PCs we only had to plug plug in an active LA N connection, in this case, the Garmin radar cable (with associated hardware to control the scanner as described on OCPN. The PC sees activity and turns on the ethernet port. Can't do anything unless you have the radar attached and fired up, otherwise "network cable unplugged". In hindsight it was simple and fairly automatic once the firewalls were properly modified.
