Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hi Dave,
The long cable from the scanner to the Amp adapter is a crossover cable.
The short cable from the adapter to the PC is a straight cable.
I was going to climb the mast again and reseat the network cable anyway.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Dave,
I figured out how to invite you to a TeamView meeting. I can share our desktop and hopefully you can take control. Look for the invitation to join the meeting. It was sent to your email address.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Dave,
Looks like you may be off line. Download full version of TeamViewer and create an account. Then let us know what a good time would be for us to do a remote session.

Maybe the radar does not work? Any way to test it with multi display?
Maybe appear to be a dumb question, but once I had a computer apart and was having trouble getting it working again....my wife told me to plug in the power! Sometimes we get too focused and don't see the real problem.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Actually, a good point. Don't tell Dave and Chuck, who made me promise to "step away from the hardware" but I did email a buddy with the same scanner and an MFD, asking to plug my scanner in. Unfortunately he answered me from the Bahamas. I could wander the marina and make friends with a Garmin owner, if there is one... I'll look, thanks

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Helmsmatt, the tcpip address is not critical, the scanner uses UDP not TCP. If you go direct from scanner to PC, you need a crossover cable. If you go via a hub, you need a standard Fly lead. The cabling is different...

Some hubs these days do autoswitching, and will work with either. A straight thru cable, although it works, is less than ideal as it can create corrupt packets, - data errors, causing re-transmission. Use the correct cables for a trouble free install.

Does sound to me like a physical problem as well as the dll setup. The unkown network thing is fine.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Matt/Cindy...

OK, I'm online now.

I set up a simple Wn7 machine with as close a configuration to yours as possible.

1. Internal Wifi connection, DHCP to boat AP, onto internet.
2. Hard-wired cable to switch with gradar plugged into switch. That interface set to 172.16.1.1/16.

A previous note you made caught my eye:
the command
Code:
netsh interface ip show join
without OCPN running, for the hardwired interface, shows 4 connections active.

The same command with OCPN running, shows 5 connections, the new one having been added by OCPN at 239.254.2.0

So, Windows knows about the multicast group requested by OCPN.

Does yours do the same?

Dave

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Thanks Matt,
Your input is greatly appreciated.
The Garmin scanner manual describes the long cable as a cross over cable. My checking the color codes also confirm that it is. This cable plugs into the Amphenol female to female adapter that has the scanner boot switch connected to it. There is a short cable that connects the adapter to the PC. This one is a straight through cable.
Logic dictates that this configuration is OK?
The other Matt

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Dave,
Are you able to call Matt's phone number. Remote sessions are so much easier if we can talk.

I ran netsh. Get 4 connections without and with OpenCPN running.

No phone service here.
How do I temporarily take control of the desktop?

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

I can see your cursor occasionally and I tried not to move my mouse so it would allow you to control. There must be another way for me to give you control. I will investigate
