Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

This is the report I was referring to.

A couple of students in Austria wanted to make a self navigating small yacht, including an anti-collision system.

When they would not get help from the radar manufacturers even when they offered to sign a non disclosure agreement, they went ahead and solved the problem and then published it all in a scientific paper.
The link to the paper:
http://www.cci.dmu.ac.uk/administrat...1326903964.pdf

I love their setup to listen to the communication, see the picture below cut from the paper.

Hi Hubert,

I had made a donation before the new setup was going. Can you move that to the radar project or in some way count it towards that project?

Sorry, but I'm just a contributor as you are - Dave might be able to move your donation.

BTW: this evening we are at 29% - and it's really not that difficult to move some $$/€€ to make that subproject fly....

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Great concept! Just kicked in $50 to help make it happen. Thanks for all your efforts Dave et al. in making OpenCPN a first class program.

I currently don't have a specific radar system to support (or a boat for that matter) but am looking forward to that day...

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

for those that do not follow up the donation tracker:

coverage is now 79% so there is still an effort required to make the project fly.

here you go:

OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage

and as always, every $/€ or what so ever counts...

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

So, at target at $1100! Go get one, Dave!

Looking forward to some screenshots from the first beta of the radar plug-in. Don't have a radome myself, yet ... , but will monitor the progress closely.

Keep up the good work!

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Very, very cool! And all this without much advertising/marketing.

Dave, please also document how you captured and analyzed the Ethernet traffic between radar and MFD. So others can follow your lead and integrate other types of radars.

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Hello Radar Dudes and Dudettes...

Fantastic! Unbelievable response to the OpenCPN Radar Overlay Project.

The combination of Open Source software models and a sharply focused user base is a wonderful thing.....

Our goal has been reached, and the Garmin scanner has been ordered and set for delivery about 25 April. In the meantime, I will start documenting and sharing what I know already about wiring and other interface stuff.

I thank you all for your continuing interest. I will post regular updates on my progress here. Stay tuned.

Dave

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

Even if the target has been reached I observe that the amount increases. Maybe the graphical tool at the entrance page makes it more visible and encourages donations. If so, I think it is really good.

Let it remain there!

It is great that the project gets donations and Dave can use the money any way he sees fit.
Maybe later a second radar sensor of a different brand or what ever...

Maybe the text could be altered to "donations for hardware acquisitions" to make the software more versatile, or something like that...

Re: OpenCPN Radar Overlay PlugIn

This is very exciting project.

I see you meet your funding goal. Are you taking donations still? Maybe for a future project?
