Lots to think about here.

I've thought about MARPA in software on the OCPN PlugIn side. It would be a significant programming effort, and even more significant testing effort to get OCPN MARPA working reliably enough to depend on it when the chips are down. But it could be done. In fact, this would be the only way to get MARPA on Garmin OCPN overlay systems, AFAICT.

But I would not hold my breath waiting for this. Software-only PlugIn MARPA is not currently on any OCPN roadmap. Too many other good fish to fry before this one.

Looking at your 4 proposed solutions for MARPA on Navico, I tend to favor #4. We certainly could cause the OCPN PlugIn to send target id and heading info down the network wire, if we knew (by wireshark snooping?) what was needed by the radome. Logically speaking, then, there would be no need for additional proprietary hardware. This is good.

To get started, I think the thing to do would be to invest in the Navico hardware and do some snooping of the interfaces to figure out how the OCPN PlugIn can emulate the functionality, sans hardware.

Thank you for pondering this. It helps enormously to know that software only MARPA is highly unlikely.

I will be more than happy to contribute any snoopings I can usefully make once I get around to buying hardware. That may be a while though...

Hi Pete,

I'm just in the process of purchasing a 4G Simrad and reading the installation instructions it appears that to make MARPA work the fast heading data is being fed via the RL10 interface (or RL11 which connects directly to 0183).
When the 4G reads the correct NMEA string for heading it will enable the MARPA functionality in the scanner.
The RL10 or RL11 are included in the box in this country.
My plan is to use the heading data from my raymarine SPX10 accessed via either NMEA 2000 or 0183.
The question of the display functionality is for Dave, Kees and the other clever brains who I am very grateful are making this all happen..

Hi all,
The BR24G plug-in doesn't do MARPA. We haven't seen any evidence of the RI units communicating Heading data to either the radome or the MFD units (yet). If you have a MFD that generates the MARPA NMEA 0183 TLL and TLM sentences, these can be used by the AIS section (courtesy of Nohal) and treated as AIS targets with associated alarms etc. But you have to have the MFD designate the MARPA targets first. I haven't been able to test it yet for Nohal but that's the last I heard. Maybe someone else has been able to do this.

Amazing job on putting gradar together, thanks!
I'm buying the scanner now. I know this is a stupid question, but in checking the online garmin install manual, they refer to power and ground connections in addition to the RJ45 cable. I assume this is also necessary for the gradar installation? Likely smart to put on it's own breaker? Also, it sounds like the radar should be powered up before firing up OpenCPN? Does this mean the hardware switch we install needs to be switched on also, before starting the program?

I recommend having the scanner on its own breaker. This is the main power source for the scanner, and only requires a few amps during transmit.

You may apply power to the scanner, the separate hardware switch, and OpenCPN in any order convenient. Everything will synchronize as soon as the scanner begins its warmup cycle and OpenCPN recognises this state.

I personally leave the scanner breaker ON 24/7, as I do for my traditional Furuno radars.

I would like to just have a confirmation on the junction plate Amphenol, it must be welded to a ground wire connecting the Pin5 RJ45 plug?
The switch used for?
Another thing to do?

The switch "ON" connects Pin 5 to ground to cause the scanner to "power up" when you want to use the radar. When the switch is "OFF", the radar goes to a very low power shutdown state.

for those who are working on a Navico radar interface, I now have a 4G installed with an NSS7, RI10, WiFi, AIS and Actisense NGW, plus STng, ST1 and NMEA 0183 data streams (plus 3 PC's) - and I have 4 full weeks to play with it.
If anyone has specific data/information they would like captured please let me know?

I board not to "opencpn.log" file to the root directory, and I'm looking for is not found! I installed and uninstalled several times OpenCPN still no file "opencpn.log"

I utise the OpenCPN software: 3.3.814
64-bit Windows 7
Gradar 1.2

I just have a Garmin 18 "HD radar coupled with Amphenol.
