And torrent clients are configurable, so you can throttle down the usage.

Easy to set up and very unobtrusive.

Hello all....

We have a proposal under discussion for a way to mitigate some of the large current and anticipated bandwidth and storage requirements for opencpn.org.

We are considering accepting minimal text advertising on the opencpn.org site.
Any revenue generated would be used to partially offset the storage and bandwidth costs incurred by Southbay Networks, our generous sponsor.

The presentation would be very similar to the text linked "Ads by Google" that you see on this very CruisersForum page, between the banner and the content.

There would be no graphic presentation.

Before we move forward with this plan, I'd like to get some user feedback. I expect there are some strong opinions out there, and I want to hear all sides.

Thanks
Dave

Sounds totally reasonable to me.

I wonder, will Adblock Plus let me allow ads just when on one domain? I could allow them to show for opencpn.org but keep blocking everywhere else.

I am actually considering ads on my site. Bummer, but there ya go.

Hello dacust, yes you can just right click on adblock icon "disable on this site".. do note the page owner benefits only from clicks not page views..

Dang, I had looked through all the options everywhere, but not the little ABP stop sign on the toolbar. It works.

If OpenCPN puts up ads, I'll make a point to click through on interesting stuff.

Thanks.

Broken NOAA Links

Hi All.

New here. I downloaded Open CPN to view charts so I can start learning how. I went to the NOAA website for nautical charts and tried to download the free charts, but got a page that says the link is missing or broken.
Same for any of their links to free stuff. Does anyone know what this is about?

Thanks.
Bill

I am busy right now and don't have time to go look at those links, but in the mean time, try this:

Try the links and instructions at the second link in my signature line. Anything on that page should work fine in OpenCPN.

Thanks.

I found the problem. My antivirus software was redirecting all those links. Once I turned that feature off, I got to the NOAA page.

Thank you so much scubataz.
The download links will change later today, and point to the site/space you so generously have provided.

With respect to adverts, I think its a necessary cost recovery requirement for the hosting sponsor. This is a great piece of software so anything that helps its maturity is OK with me.

As always...continues success.

Dave, Thomas, all ...

first of all I can offer to host the Pilot Charts on OpenCPN.de (I could spare about 1 TB/month traffic for it).

But here is another suggestion:
I have also registered the domain "OpenCPN.info". And as I will host it on the same VServer as the .de domain, traffic could be the same.

My general idea was to use this domain for
  1. an OpenCPN forum (I don't like this forum here very much)
  2. additional downloads (e.g. the Pilot Charts)
  3. previous versions of the help files (both, for downloading the offline version and viewing it online)
and I thought off subdomains like "en.opencpn.info" and "de.opencpn.info" for localized content, whereas the forum could go under "forum.opencpn.info".

Let me know what you think about it,

Gunther

I dont like forums either. List servers are great for high volume traffic and many sources to archive the data. Please???......

Free host for download files

An idea is to use a Free host for download files, I am using free services for my website: www.MediaFire.com and RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting because I have the same problem.

More, see: Category:File hosting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Declination 2010.0

Hello.

I realized a world KAP map from the WMM 2010.0 declination Image (World Magnetic Model - Maps of Magnetic Elements)

I uploaded the map on mediafire.

WMM2010.7z

You can download the chart and try it. If you want, this chart can be freely distributed as you like.

Ciao, Marco.
