opencpn on tablet / android

I'm using OpenCPN Android 1.0.5. (Base 4.1.1028) on a new tablet.
Is it possible to use AIS an this version?

I tried it, but which which name is the dataport for AIS?

Hello Robin2,

As the paid version is identified as 1.0.10, I do presume that you are using the free version.

Sorry but I do not think that you will get much help for this version

there is no update for the free version, a 1.0.11 paid version is expected shortly, please get on the train

Re: opencpn on tablet / android

Hi AISEAG,

that was my first fault.
I have the opencpn the uptodate version 1.0.10 now.
But who is the name of the dataport?
Did this version works with the AIS receiver via USB / RS232 adapter ?

Robin2,

You need to select "add" to create a connection line and describe the device which is sending you AIS information.

Do not hesitate to brownse thru the OpenCPN Documentation

OpenCPN User Manual

Re: opencpn on tablet / android

Why do you wire a wireless device?

Why not AIS and other data via bluetooth or wifi?

I tested all android betas as they were built. All, or nearly all worked with ais flawlessly.

If your TABLET has serial and you have android drivers for your cables then it should work. Otherwise you can always use some sort of data bridge that pick up serial and outputs to IP then use OpenCPN and indicate the IP in the "add connection".

We have android OpenCPN and the ais works great on it.

If you have for example an raspberry Pi with KPLEX and a AIS connected to the Pi, you can easily feed AIS nmea data over WIFI. Have a look at OPENPLOTTER to find out howto. You will have to use your raspberry pi's Ipaddress and port 10110 in the config for ais on your android device. Confirmed:This way AIS works perfect on your android tablet.

I want to use an old Nasa Marine engine 1 as the receiver. There is only a seriell port .
On the tablet I need the Port name.

There might be other ways to use the old NASA ais, But I'm pretty sure the easiest way is to use a Pi, loaded with openplotter, Wifi, and a serial to usb adapter for connecting the AIS. Then, connect the android tablet to the openplotter wifi acesspoint and have the AIS data over wireless.
This is proven and easy.

Re: opencpn on tablet / android

Thank you for your tips. But I have no pi; but I think it could be a good solution for the AIS as wellas for opencpn on the pi??
But that would be a new project.

Do you think it is possible to connect the old ais engine via usb/rs232 adapter directly to the tablet?

Wifi will be your friend. I think something like this device also will work fine:
WiFi Rs422 485 Serial Adapter Converter Module Wireless External Dipole Antenna | eBay

But the pi is less expensive and absolutely not more complicated. You can well use the pi only as a "wifi" nmea server for your ais ( and maybe gps ) you can run opencpn on the tablet, you do not need to run opencpn on the pi (more experimental) This device form Digital yatch is a no brainer, but cost you US$ 550,-

I can't remember on Android (but I could check this) but otherwise the serial port pops up when connected, so you do not need to know whatt tty it is attached to. I am also not sure Android is a tty styled or COM styled spelling.

What happens when you connect the ais engine via the serial/usb adapter to your usb port on the tablet? Nothing pops up in the add serial port window?

What happens if connected as above you use any other serial port data App?

It sounds you are making a simple thing somewhat more complex than it is.

Start up the ais, connect the usb adapter, look up ports on the tablet.

I would guess they come up as COM or dev/bus/usb ... rather than tty, because I have seen COM port monitoring Apps but never a tty one.

Try this and similar:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...usbtools&hl=es

Remember as said there is software that translates serial to net. OpenCPN connects to net easily.

Cheers,
b.
