OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Good news for me today...

Another boat here had a raspberry pi2 that they burned out by leaving it turned on in the rain. They gave it to me a few days ago then left. It turns out only the usb power connector was burned and I can power it from the header so I have a working pi again.

I got the FBO working today (accelerated panning) but the results are not as good as expected.

Basically vector charts are much better panning with about double the frame rate. I have 8-10 frames a second everywhere with cm93 (1280x800 display) but raster charts are slower than before as now they are only 13 fps instead of 17-20 like before.

I need to investigate this a lot more, and possibly disable the FBO with raster charts. I also need to figure out if the android style panning and zooming acceleration make sense to use since it cheats a bit but might prove useful on these systems.

The standard OpenCPN git repo builds for RPi and runs OK, but does not yet contain any optimizations for the platform. There are problems with OpenGL mode.

Sean has a repo with his work-in-process, described in this thread. Status is unknown.

There are plans for more work on RPi, just not enough time/resources to implement much yet.

The source code repositories for all the plugins are linked from the download page. If you are referring to a package repository, the beta OpenCPN PPA at https://launchpad.net/~nohal/+archive/ubuntu/opencpn has packages for ARMv7 (=RPi v2), we never had a repository for the original RPi (ARMv6) and I stopped building packages for it even locally as nobody ever seemed to use them.

I get this same error on CubieTruck.

Before the error is displayed OpenCpn stalls for a few seconds (sometimes 10s).

Then after the error is displayed there is a rendering problem, like a solid colour block.

Is this the same problem, or just a coincidence ?

If it's the same, How can we chase it down ?

I have always been annoyed with the bad alloc errors. Sometimes for raspberry pi, I have to reboot to fix this, as they occur when the video drivers get into a bad state. I didn't think it was much of a problem for the cubie truck though.

It is a problem with texture compression caching turned on for raster charts.

Is it possible that GLshim is getting into a bad state?

For info I've tested the rather new 7 inch Raspberry touch screen. Rather nice and very simple to get going. Just unpack, connect cables and start OCPN. No drivers, no nothing.
Next step would be to make a little box.

I haven't tried but it may be some performance issues.
It's already problem to receive UDP data via wifi. The update seems slow so the GPS timeout is sometimes running out.
This is strange since the reported CPU load is never above 40%. Why is he not using all available CPU?
Well, at least the pi and the 7" screen never takes more then 1 A, typically 0,8 A.
