Well, maybe to your surprise timesharing systems are hotter today than they have ever been. The names have changed, we call it 'cloud computing', or 'clusters' nowadays. The idea is the same. You get an environment for yourself, but you share the CPU cycles with the rest.

Well, please test the build I have just uploaded. If it starts I'm happy.

Thanks,

Hi again,

OK, I can see the problem: the app is still referencing libwx on your user directory and not the bundled version. I'll watch for the new version.

Indeed, that is still the problem. I have a script that changes the references outside the application bundle to references inside the application bundle (using OSX's install_name_tool).

I seem to have missed one. Will upload a new one this evening.

Erwin.

Its the radar scanners that are closed, not vice-versa, and they sure love selling overpriced packages with a plotter blabla. You could still get a separate furuno radar and run the less on your onboard pc. There's also the koden pc radar which may permit full integration. I don't really care

Another one here

Quite true for the market leaders, Raymarine and Furuno. But clearly not so for some of the little guys; the Koden scanners are available for use with several software packages, including Nobeltec's. If someone wanted to integrate support for Koden into OpenCPN then I suspect that Koden would be willing to provide the specs. At least worth asking. And there are a few other small radar manufacturers to check with.

Furuno radar images can be displayed on their Maxsea software, but they have kept the requirement for an expensive MFD. Technically, it would be easy to eliminate that requirement; they are not likely to do that. And Cmap has now required Maxsea to have a Cmap-only version, with a separate version for ENC (S-57) and BSB charts, so that still wouldn't provide the desired flexibility I am looking for.

For my passage from the Caribbean to New York I installed the Furuno MFD8 system, which proved valuable. It is very well done, but costs about double what a mini-ITX/OpenCPN/scannner system would cost. So my needs have been met for the foreseeable future. Still, an affordable nav/radar system would benefit a lot of people.

This thread is about the OpenCPN software for the Mac. I am aware of only one full featured nav program for the Mac: MacENC. It is excellent, but doesn't display Cmap charts. It too doesn't display radar images. Mac users would greatly benefit by this alternative. The Mac Mini would be a great hardware solution for cruisers.

As for the Iris pc radar you reference, it appears to be a solution at least 5 years too late. It is a digitizer for older analog scanners; modern digital scanners include all of the digitization and processing internally, and interface with an ethernet cable (and in one case with USB).

This time I moved the copies of the libs in my local install of WX to another location. This way I could test the result. It works here..

Thanks Erwin. Folks, please test away on the Mac version of OpenCPN and let us know how it goes.

Erwin - were there a lot of changes to be merged back to the mainline code base? If you'll send me a PM with a zip of the files, I'll prepare for the upcoming merge.

Pfff, one typo (DIR instead of PATH) in my script.

A new one has just been uploaded.

Actually, I don't think so. Currently I'm building with Xcode and I have a shell script to change some of that magic library path stuff.

I had to make one patch (very small) to set the initial position of the OpenCPN window (first run of app) to just below the OSX menu bar.

I'll send some patches to you when somebody besides me has been able to start it succesfully

Success!!!

Hi Erwin,

It loads and seems to execute as expected.

Just checking my location aboard Carina the GPS input works and all charts display correctly, at least at a superficial glance. I think you are ready to get this posted on Sourceforge for others to check out.

Thanks again for the good work.
