OpenCPN on Android

I use OpenCPN on my laptop, Windows 7, and find it fantastic. We cruise in the Mediterranean. One of its most useful secondary functions is its Anchor Watch which we use all the time and which has saved our bacon more than once. We once slept comfortably in 55kt wind. By routing the alarm signal into the boat's audio system we get an alarm that would wake the dead.
I also own a Google Nexus 7 on which I run my aviation software. Is there any likelihood of OpenCPN coming out in an Android version? It would increase its utility many times over.
Regardless, I'd like to express my appreciation of what the OpenCPN team are doing for the sailing community.

golfosca...
The chance for a native Android version is very close to none as it would basically mean writing it again. But you can run OpenCPN on an Android device - have a look at the very extensive thread about it at OpenCpn Install on Android Tablets Easier Now.

Re: OpenCPN on Android

You could go this route to get Opencpn on a tablet:

Remote PC access software. Remote login for remote desktop | Splashtop

Sounds like it should work good.
I don't have a tablet yet to try it.
Anyone tried this?

You can of course use TeamViewer to run your Windows laptop remotely from your Android Tablet. Add a USB mouse to your tablet and you´re in business, storing your laptop safely below.

You need to set up a LAN to connect the two. You may already have a router installed for your internet activities in your marina?

See attached screendump from my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tablet.

I've switched from Teamviewer to Splashtop Streamer on two netbooks (W7 and XP) and my Galaxy Note II.

A bit touchy with my arthritic fingers but works fine.

keyspc....

MxMariner is not a clone of OpenCPN, although it does share some design elements such as icons, etc.. It is a stand-alone application for Android devices.

The developer, Will, is a strong supporter of OpenCPN, and I'm happy to recommend MxMariner for Android mobile devices.

Enjoy!

I use both open cpn and MXMariner, from a user prospective they are only similar. The look being close is nice, but much is missing from MX. The most obvious thing missing in regard to this thread is....the anchor watch! Ugh how I wish it was.

However, I will say MX Mariner works well on the nexus 7

Golfosca,
I'm using the Nexus 7 myself, as a back-up.
If your main interest is the anchor watch, get yourself the Mad Mutt Marine Navigator Full app from Google store. However, the max alarm sound level of the Nexus requires it to be put next to your pillow.
For navigation you can use now, since about 2 months, the Navionics app. It's not free, but almost....

Re: OpenCPN on Android

this is quite late to answer, I wasn't here for a while....

for the anchorwatch I use "My Anchor Watch Pro" from google play.

- Alarm when boat exceeds set Drift Limit or at GPS failure
- Audible/Vibrator Alarm
- Audible and Visual Warnings at non-fatal GPS issues
(such as poor accuracy and temporary unavailability)
- All sounds and indications are configurable

- Optional sending of an SMS or Email message to another phone at various Alarm events is possible, so if you sit in a beachcafe and your anchor slips you receive sms message. Maybe you have the time to hop in your dhingi to save your boat.

there is a free version too... My Anchor Watch Free

Re: OpenCPN on Android

Thanks to all these responses, expecially Zoef and Rik-Lu.
My reason for wanting to use the Nexus is battery drain. I'm astounded watching the ampmeter on my boat, it hits 10 amps sometimes when the laptop is working at all hard.
The Nexus on the other hand uses about 0.5 amps to stay fully charged.
Zoef, the Nexus will in fact give a very loud alarm; if you use the audio output jack on the top to connect into the boat's sound system.
I'm going to try Rik-lu's suggestion of Anchor Watch Pro as a stand alone. It won't be quite as good as the OpenCPN because OpenCPN allows one to define a no-go zone to avoid, as well as the normal circle of comfort. But guarding against anchor pull is 90% of the answer.
Happy sailing all.

Re: OpenCPN on Android

For anyone interested, I followed Rik-lu's suggestion to go onto Google Play, and found the App called Anchor Alert. It does cost $17, but what it does have is the ability to define an exclusion zone as well as the normal swing area.
