OpenCPN on an iPad ?
Is anyone running OpenCpn on an iPad? Is it even possible? This just seems like the perfect marriage...

Sorry, it's not really possible without starting all over. iOS applications have to be written in Objective C, which would necessitate a complete rewrite of openCPN. iOS requires that applications be written to a specific SDK that's separate from the Mac itself, and is much more limited, meaning you do a lot of thing differently then they're done now, and there are probably some things you can't do at all. Basic things like memory management for large chart libraries has to be done differently for iOS than for the Mac. Then of course you have to get the app through the Apple app store, which is another thing entirely.....
That said, there are already BSB chart programs available, along with the Navionics program/chart sets that are in heavy use. The only thing you don't already have is a free program that does CM93.

A missed opportunity...I already use iPad radar and charting apps and can check my anchor alarm from anywhere. Apps are the wave of the future, and the future is now.

Really? Maybe.
There's nothing special about "apps". Apple apps is just a closed programming model for a closed OS running on a single manufacturer's closed hardware. Maybe it'll take over. But I say it's way too soon to tell. And way too soon to proclaim it "the wave of the future".
Once you start seeing them run on other hardware and desktops and servers, then maybe they are getting somewhere.
But then, I am not really that familiar with apple stuff. Maybe I am missing the point.

Thank you all for answering. I'm with Harmony... It's a good bet, apps ARE the future!

I'd be interested in your reasons. What is unique about "apps"? I'm just not familiar enough with them to really know what the big deal is.

IMO mobile devices like smartphones and ipads will gain popularity over PC's - and we'll probably see multiple platforms (Android and Apple) compete for marketshare as usage grows, and that'll be good for all of us.
I wonder, though - as mainstream software moves off the devices and increasingly into the cloud (software as a service) - what will happen in the marine space, where constant connectivity isn't always taken for granted. I bet the Garmins and Raymarines will continue to play a large role in part because of this issue.

I guess when I think of "apps", I mean small, INEXPENSIVE programs for portable devices, be it iOS, Android, etc. For example, you can now buy marine charting software for the iPad (which features a built-in GPS in the 3G version) for under $5.00! Thats a portable chart plotter with amazing graphics for under $5.00! The iPad's touch screen is an amazing interface for reading and scrolling charts... and the software is just beginning to arrive. There is huge potential here. There are devices on the horizon which look even better, and the future looks bright. An eReader, chart plotter, tide and current software, ActiveCaptain and more on it's web browser, email terminal, weather router, and more... all in the palms of your hands. Pretty neat, huh?

I have Navionics on my iPhone. When I got knocked down, I lost just about all of the "real" electronics on the boat. We navigated to Key West with only the iPhone!

I'm sorry Scuba, that's simply not true. There has been a lot of confusion about this. Only 3G iPads have a real GPS chip. Wifi versions can only find themselves via wifi... no good for offshore nav at all...
Look here: http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/ See "assisted GPS"

Yet, to be honest, the apple page has this written: "Assisted GPS (Wi-Fi + 3G model) "
which can me misread that it is available on the wi fi AND the 3G model.....
but means only that it is on the model that has 3G....
I made this mistake before the actual shipping of the product....
All are correct in stating that only the version that has 3G can have ASSISTED GPS....., the other does not...
