OpenCPN on a Netbook

Unfortunately all builds, including 1.3.6, have the same problem. The program won't start up.

Sorry for the trouble.

Please try this:

1. in Program Files/OpenCPN, delete the entire directory containing the MSVC runtime libs (Microsoft.V80.CRT.) This will cause the system to try to link to libs already available on your system in Windows.

2. If that doesn't work, download and run the Microsoft Redistributable package for MSVC 2005.

Download details: Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)


This will load into your windows directory the appropriate libraries for MSVC required by opencpn.

Please let us know which of these methods works (or doesn't) so that we can update the installer correctly.

Cagney/Marco: Could you please monitor this and make Wiki entry if appropriate? I was afraid that we would sooner or later have this trouble with MSVC runtime libs. This is the dreaded dll-hell.

Thanks for the fast feedback. For your information the little machine runs windos xp home sp3. Build 1120 runs fine; newer builds don't work. So I tried your tricks. First I uninstalled opencpn the proper way then

1) delete microsoft.v80.crt directory; no luck
2) uninstall and install 1.3.6. again
3) visual c++ 2005 redistributable package; no luck
4) uninstall and install 1.3.6. again

Then I tried visual c++ 2008 redistributable package because I run sp3; no luck

So I am sorry to say nothing works.

I would say; the correct order would be
1) install 1.3.6.
2) delete microsoft.v80.crt directory
3) Install visual c++ 2005 redistributable package

Is a virus scanner a blocking issue?
Could security settings be a problem? (are you logged-in as Admin)

Regarding OpenCpn on a netbook...

I run Opencpn on an asus netbook. It works great, but its a bit annoying to have to push 'shift and +' to zoom in. Does anyone have a work around?

I use an ASUS and a mouse with a wheel. In Settings/Toolbox/etc. select the GUI option 'Enable Wheel Zoom to Cursor'. Works great on all charts.

Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+X will also zoom in and out, if that is more usable...

Thanks for the ideas but what I'm really after is one handed operation without the complexity of having to add another piece of gear (a mouse) to what I already consider a bit precarious situation; the use of laptop on a sailboat.

I suppose I'm being a pit picky, but it seems it would be so simple a change to add '=' to list of key commands that do the zoom-in function.

I will put a note in the feature request area of the forum.

Not sure I understand the question. What 'setup window' do you refer to? If it's the main screen window then you may find your screen settings are wrong. I use an ASUS EeePC which has screen dimension settings of 800x600, 1024x600, and 1024x768. The last one (1024x768) requires that the screen be scrolled up (or is it down?) to see the bottom of the screen. The setting of 1024x600 shows the entire display screen nicely.

The setup window when you click the wrench. It has tabs at the top and a scroll bar on the right because it is too tall to fit on my display.

If I click "Charts" it does not go to that tab, instead it just scrolls down and stays on the same tab.

The weird thing is that it only does it once, on the second try it works fine, so it isnt so bad. It probably is not a bug in opencpn, but a bug in the widget (wxwindows?)

@gecko: I experience the same problem, using ubuntu 9.04 on an EEE901 (1024*600). Bit annoying but not really a problem.

@gdd: when not using a mouse, i zoom using the touchpad "scroll" function. On my old laptop that was done by "scrolling" the rightmost area of the touchpad, on my eee i use both fingertips. Works for me, although somewhat prone to overzoom.

I boght a msi wind 123-010 netbook, and installed chakra (arch) linux on it. Then compiled openCPN from the source package. Then copied my charts from the laptop to the netbook. BSB charts work fine, but trying to view CM93 does not.

The opencpn.log is full of lines like this:
cm93 chart Error ingesting /home/anders/......./....G

Alle the files exist, and appears to be right. What went wrong?

Hey, got it - openCPN is not happpy with non-ascii characters in the chart paths, "mv Søkort Sokort" and changing the paths in openCPN fixed it...
