You need to compile OpenCPN following the instructions on this page Compiling in Ubuntu.
The .deb package is for 32 bits processors only.

Unless you have more than 4GB ram I would recommend installing the 32 bit version - performance difference is negligible really, and you will be having a much easier time finding packages etc

FYI follow-up PM sent to Mark, confirming that his description is exactly what my current experience is in being unable to upload WP's to my Garmin 128 GPS. (Thanks for trying to follow up on this, Mark!)

This is, I'm told, a problem on all recent Garmins - they simply do not correctly implement the NMEA sentences required to action route uploads. It has been suggested that this is intentional to block the use of third-party software such as OpenCPN which is cheaper (and more functional) than garmin's offerings - but that couldn't be possible, could it?

geckosenator,

Did you ever get to trying OpenCPN on the Beagleboard. I have one sitting on my desk and I am considering it for a low power option for my onboard computer. I bought a sunlight readable 7" display from Lilliput and thought the beagle might be a good, low power option.

Open CPN on netbook

I have OpenCPN on an Acer 8.5inch Netbook for a backup, it works fine, I dont think they make them anymore, i think they make a 10.5 inch now,I use a small GPS antenna with it, the antenna is about 50.00 and plugs into the UBS Port it works inside you do not have to mount it outside, looks like a black hockey puck, you can either download NOAA charts or use an external CD burner to load charts with. as most small computers do not have a CD.
I have never used it full time, as i have a dedicated Desktop for full time Navigation which also uses OpenCpn, which is a fine program.
