OpenCPN Nothing Happens Ubuntu 12.04?

I just today tried to run opencpn on the home PC running the latest 32 bit Ubuntu and nothing happens. It used to work on the prior version of ubuntu.
So I run from terminal and get no messages and nothing happens.
So I upgraded to 2.6 beta. When run from terminal, I get an opencpn standard beta warning window, close it and nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Re: opencpn nothing happens Ubuntu 12.04?

Ok after 5 minutes of nothing, it pops up with this version mismatch
a libgps api version mismatch.
select ok, and it seems to work.
I dont have a GPS on the home PC.

But why the long long delay?

Re: opencpn nothing happens Ubuntu 12.04?

s...717:

libgps is reported broken on 12.04
see: OpenCPN::Tracker All Projects: Tasklist

I'll take a look at this as soon as I get the nerve to try upgrading from 8.04 to 12.04. Yikes....

Can you run without gpsd?

Also, the messages like
Code:
(opencpn:16117): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_label_set_markup: assertion `GTK_IS_LABEL (label)' failed
are of no consequence. Seem to be built into the wxWidgets libraries.

Thanks for the report
Dave

Re: opencpn nothing happens Ubuntu 12.04?

It wont restart today, just waiting or hanging.
You can set up a VM of 12.04 using virtual box from oracle.
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Do you mean delete uninstall gpsd?

To get going again, just rename the opencpn.config file, and restart.

pirate Re: opencpn nothing happens Ubuntu 12.04?

thanks for that. That file is in a hidden folder called .opencpn and is named opencpn.conf
I renamed the file to oldopencpn.conf

When you do that you have to redirect opencpn to your charts.
It is running again and responding quickly.
I am also not getting libgps mismatch error. still dont have any gps attached to the home PC.
So what happened?

Re: opencpn nothing happens Ubuntu 12.04?

I got the same error, and deleting .opencpn did not change anything. I used the latest beta (built 1624) with an up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04.

Opencpn detect that I have libgps-2.0 (message in opencpn.log), as I saw an trace for missing libnss-db, I added the library but quite logically it does not change anything.

I run opencpn with strace the file can be downloaded here http://www.portanna.org/download/private/strace.log as far as I can see, they is not missing dependency, but libgpsd client lock on waiting information.

My GPS being a Sirf-binary only GPS, I have no alternative to GPSd, any bypass would be welcome. Note that I tried to force the load of an old version libgpsd-19 from a 10.04 without any success.

Are you able to run xgps and your getting signal? Just to isolate if its the gpx and linux, or opencpn.

Re: opencpn nothing happens Ubuntu 12.04?

xgps works fine, so I get a signal on the home PC.

dmesg says it was connected to dev/ttyusb0

I tried all different settings and can't get opencpn to work.

I tried typing in the dev/ttyusb0 as it will not show up in the list. And I tried gpsd libgps.

As you have gpsd running, you must connect to gpsd not /dev/ttyUSB0, which gpsd is using. Xgps works because it is connected to gpsd. Gpsd is a gps server allowing multiple connections.
Instructions are available in the documentation Toolbox Settings | Official OpenCPN Homepage. Your nmea data source must be "Network LIBGPS", unless your system is very old (ubuntu 9.10 and older).

Re: opencpn nothing happens Ubuntu 12.04?

if the beta is at the opencpn download page, I just tried to install and get several serious errors about the package management.

I have installed lots of packages but this was a first.
