OpenCPN newbie--Is this the way the app is supposed to work?

I've just started playing around with OpenCPN (I have the Mac version) and I'd like to view the areas all around Long Island Sound. I've downloaded and "installed" the appropriate ECN files. As I move along the area, zooming in and out as needed, various ECN files get loaded, each taking anywhere from 15 seconds to several minutes. Is there any way to select a larger area and have the program load all of the ECN's for that area in one (albeit) long shot rather than proceeding at a slow and frustrating pace?

nestorph...

That is the way it works with ENCs, (aka vector charts). The SENC files need to be built once, on first viewing. Thereafter, those charts are ready for immediate load.

You may be happier with raster charts (NOAA RNCs), at least in the US. NOAA ENCs are tough to work with, and are not really designed for the types of places that most cruisers find themselves. They are designed mainly for big ships entering major ports.

Welcome aboard

Thanks, Dave. Took your advise and all is well! Much, much faster overall.
