OpenCPN Name Collision...

Folks....

Sorry to have to bring this type of administrative problem to the Forum, but you all should know...

In another thread, you will read:

Code:
I've updated the Play Store version to enable Google Earth and switched it to the icons used by all the other versions.
This action also appears to have included renaming his version to "OpenCPN".

This seems to have caused an immediate name collision, and the original OpenCPN app was removed almost immediately by Google for "interference with another app".

Now I believe Google has removed the wrong OpenCPN app in error, and I am attempting to get Google to rectify this situation.

There may be another "interference" reason that OpenCPN was removed from the Play Store, and I am attempting to determine from Google the specifics. But lets all understand this: If original OpenCPN is interfering with something, so is OpenCPN free, since "free" is a simple repackaging/resigning of the original APK.

But I have to say that I think the "interference" is likely over the user-visible name. And I think the shoe goes on the other foot.

So I respectfully request that the publisher of the free version rename his app to something other than "OpenCPN", so that users may clearly understand the difference and make their choice freely.

Thanks, and now back to good old technical work...

I'm afraid this guy has shown his colors and seriously doubt he will cooperate.

Can you rename the real one and re-post it? Such as 'AndroidOpenCPN'?

I wish he was in my anchorage!

Re: OpenCPN Name Collision...

I've only seen this now... what naming conventions do you suggest? The 'free' bit sounded like it was one of those feature-crippled apps that have been flooding the app store.

PS: It might be easier to email in situations like this. There wasn't any notification from Google either.

Re: OpenCPN Name Collision...

I'd suggest a simple reversion to the previous name, which IIRC was something like "OpenCPN Free". That reversion, with the altered icon, will make the choices clear to all users, I think. And probably will satisfy Google.
