OpenCPN Jagged (Sawtooth) Chart Display

Hi OpenCPN Friends - Has anyone experienced .kap charts displayed in an unreadable jagged, saw-tooth-like image? The attached image shows the .kap Bauhaus charts of Panama presented in OpenCPN 4.8.0. Any advice?
Thank you in advance! Willy

So this is a Windows system? W7 or W8.1?

Can you try with OpenGL OFF?

Does this happen on just one chart or many?
Have you removed texture mapping if you are using it?
Have you rebuilt the entire database?

@wstigg

It's almost certainly a question of bad geo-referencing/conversion of the chart.
We have seen this kind of distortion a number of times on this forum.
Check what opencpn.log writes about your particular chart.
It is fairly simple to fix the chart, if you know how to do chart conversions.
As said before, ... share the chart and you will probably have it fixed.

Re: OpenCPN Jagged (Sawtooth) Chart Display

Hi folks, Sorry for delayed reply and thanks for your replies to my initial query. I'm new to this forum business so had to learn how to post the chart file. The Bauhaus Panama charts are a sizable collection of .kap files so I selected a couple of the .kaps and zipped them into a single file that isn't too large (I hope) for posting here. These .kaps are of the north coast of Panama, just to the west of Colon and the Canal. Hopefully these charts offer a clue as to the cause of the sawtooth / jagged presentation. Many thanks again! Cheers, Willy

BTW, you have to zoom way in for the chart to appear. Thx. Willy

Re: OpenCPN Jagged (Sawtooth) Chart Display

Hi Pavel - I'm having trouble attaching my .kap files to reply. Can you advise me on this? I've picked the attachments icon which opens an attachment manager window. I've picked choose file(s) and have tried both the .zip file as well as the individual .kap files. In both cases the manager indicates these are invalid files. How to attach/upload my .kap files? Many thanks! Willy

The usual trick used on this forum is to change the extension to .doc to make the software think the file is a word document and apply more reasonable limits.

The other option is to place the files on google drive, one drive, dropbox or whatever service you prefer, share them, and post just the link.

Re: OpenCPN Jagged (Sawtooth) Chart Display

I've made dozens of KAP charts for use with OpenCPN. If one of the calibration points is wrong, the chart display will be skewed as per your image.

The attached chart is a home-made chart from a scanned page from Eric Bauhaus's The Panama Cruising Guide. These scanned KAP charts are floating around on the internet and many don't properly display on OpenCPN or other chartplotter software. The chart was calibrated incorrectly. This is not a problem with OpenCPN.

The only solution is to either rescan, calibrate and save as KAP, or there are tools to extract the scanned image from the KAP file, then recalibrate and build the chart.

Re: OpenCPN Jagged (Sawtooth) Chart Display

Hi Pavel - Many thanks for the tip. I've changed the file extension to .mpg and uploaded as a video. In fact, this is a .zip file with two .kap files for the north coast of Panama. Hopefully it's attached now? Zoom way in to see the problem. Cheers, Willy

Hi Don - Many thanks for your reply. Where do I find your attachment? I'd like to see how it presents on my version of OpenCPN. BTW, when in Panama, two different cruisers gave me USB thumb drives with the Bauhaus Charts. Both reported that the files presented fine on their OpenCPN. Is it possible that the charts could present well on one system but not on another? Cheers, Willy

No, this won't work. The forum system now tries to really treat your upload as a video file and there is no way we could get to it in the form we need.
Please rename to .doc and attach it normally. The limit for the size of the file should be several megabytes, more than enough for a compressed KAP chart.

Hi Pavel - Ooof. Limit for .doc file is 400k. So, here is link to my dropbox where you can download. Sorry that this is so difficult but I really appreciate your help! Cheers, Willy

One run of bsbfix on them later:

This is a pretty common problem seen when someone edits the header of the KAP chart manually and does not exactly know what he's doing.

Anyway, get libbsb from https://sourceforge.net/projects/lib.../libbsb-0.0.7/ and extract it to your computer, then run bsbfix on all the damaged charts. (Command line tool it is, there is no GUI)
