Dutch translation files for OpenCPN version 2.4.611 (including Dashboard and Grib files). I also made some more corrections to the Windows Installer strings on the German OpenCPN website.

My understanding is as follows:
Mark is the general word. Lighttowers, buoys, beacons and any other types of conspicious man-made or natural objects of which the "permanent" positions are known, are all marks. So: a buoy is a mark, but a mark is not a buoy per definition.

A beacon (not: a radio beacon) is a fixed mark. Lighttowers, other towers, and other fixed objects on land or in sea are beacons. So: a beacon is a mark, but a mark is not a beacon per definition.

A buoy is a floating mark. Buoys can have daymarks (a fixed structure on top of them of a certain shape) and, for recognition at night, a light with a certain character. So: a buoy is a mark, but a mark is not a buoy per definition.

Marks, beacons and buoys

The IALA definitions to be found here:
Category:2.6 Visual Aids in general: Buoyage and Beaconage - IALA Dictionary

Observe that "beacon" and "mark" are not mentioned as such, only in combination with other words.
Look at: Buoy, Navigation Mark, Fixed Mark, Floating Mark. In the definition of Navigation Mark is stated: "A fixed artificial navigation mark is often called a Beacon."

Hi ...

it's me again ...

I've been searching the web now for several hours ..., visited all sources (thanks to NAV), but I still couldn't find any kind of reference for most of the AIS terms & abbreviations.

Couldn't be that the IMO establishes a system like AIS and there is no source available for other languages like English and French!

So once again my question:
Where come the 'short_ais_type[]' from which are in ais.cpp beginning at line 264?

BTW: For the 'BuildERIShipTypeHash' (starting at line 1194) there are lots of types missing especially from the 1xxx category. Shall we add them or doesn't it make sense? Or they are unnecessary?

OK, IMHO now it's becoming critical ...
As AIS is firstly a safety feature and users may expect all messages showing up in their choosen language it is no good idea to use "self-invented abbreviations" which are in no way translatable!

BTW: When and where will be the long or short version shown?

This last list only describes the different inland vessel types (for which no abbreviations are used within the US English version of OpenCPN).

The AIS abbreviations used in OpenCPN are probably "home made" (by PjotrC), so I guess we won't find anything official on those.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but Inland AIS seems to be the only source for any kind of national definitions about AIS.
And lots of the types in OpenCPN are Inland types (all beginning with 8xxx whereas Sea ones begin with 1xxx).

So do you have any advice for how to handle them in translation?

BTW: One of the rare sources I found are the IALA Guidlines No. 1028. I attach the Appendix with some abbreviations.

AFAIK the Ship Type is given by a 4 digit number, correct?
If so, it might be helpful (e.g. to avoid any mistakes caused by translation) to also display this number.

Hi ...

one more time ...

Maybe one of the native speakers could explain what is meant by "Diving or Dive Vessel", please?
Because the German translation will be "Tauchboot" which means a submarine and I am pretty sure this isn't meant in this context.

Further more I suggest to use "Fishing Vessel" instead of "Vessel Fishing" (for all vessel types), because the latter leads to confusion on "Engaged in Fishing" as already seen in some of the translations.
