I did not succeed in the make myself understood.

I do not doubt the good will of writer of the web site opencpn.org.

I understand that this allows a translator to improve the translation into its own language.

I meant that if a translator implements this method, it will not bring the solution to other translators. They will also go in this way. In other words, I wanted to say this is a bad method of collective work. This may not be effective.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Am I missing something, or is the only way end users can have translated plugins is to pull the .po file from git and compile the plugin themselves?

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Sean...
Right..I think you're touching a good question here. The Opencpn plugin download page offers several compiled files for respective operating system. For Windows a .dll file. But installation of corresponding .mo files are not there except for Dashboard_pi and Grib_pi which are include in the OpenCPN installation process. That implies for user not familiar with source code and similar they wont get use of the translations done.
The best way may be if the plugin publisher also served a routine to automatically copy present .mo files to .......\opencpn\share\locale\....(is this structure the same for all system?)
An other method could be to include the present .mo files in language dependent directories and named as needed for respective operating system. Like opencpn-wmm_pi.mo. And ad a description how to copy the files. Not all of the users can easily perform this but it may be better than nothing?
And of course everything available at opencpn.org.
These are my instant reflections but someone else must have been thinking of this topic before?

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Hakan, I am not totally clear on the workflow for
1. Those programming and compiling.
2. Users
However, it appears there is a need for a central storage location with some clear organization.
Also, The plugin downloads should be simple to use and install for all languages and OS if possible.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Anyway you will need an installer for each operating system to make it user friendly. Something was done once by Konni for Logbook and FindIt but he gave up times ago when seeing that nobody cares about his suggestions...

Another thing is the problem with same text strings in different plugins or main program locales. There is no guide how to avoid this.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

I've an idea for further discussions
I made a simple bat file to do the job in windows. I've run it in Win-XP and W7.
If anyone would like to test it's attached. (discard the .pdf extension) This could be a way to serve plugins to all (Win) users. For other operating system someone else has to perform similarities.
So instead of offering the .dll file we also have to include available .mo files and pack them in a zip-file together with a BAT-file adapted for the actual plugin.

The user description would be something like this:
1. Download the wmm.zip file and expand it in a directory of your choice.
2. In the newly created directory there is a file called "CopyPluginWMM_Win32.bat"
3. Run that file and the wmm_pi plugin will be copied to your opencpn plugin directory.
(Windows 7 user must run it using the command "Run as administrator" found by a right mouse click.)
4. Present translation files will also be copied to corresponding OpenCPN directory.
Note: It may be that not all languages are translated. Which languages are included would be clear by viewing the file contest in the expanded directory.

Rick..
My thoughts for 1. and 2. may be clear form my last post?

The organisation is already there on opencpn.org /download/plugins --or?
What we may need is a storage of batch files for each plugin and operating system to pick from for those publishing a plugin?

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Hakan, tried it. There's always one screwball... I have Win7x64 bit.
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN\plugins
Also have C:\Program Files\ for 64 bit programs

The %PROGRAMFILES% comes up with

Quote:
Copying of the files for the WMM_pi plugin
Batch file to copy translation files for the plugin
In Win7 it must be run with the command "Run as administartor"
or you will recive the "Access denied" message.
Press any key to continue . . .
Directory for plugin files was not found. Plugin file is not copied!
Press any key to continue . . .
Is there a way to test for the two directories and do a IF then statement?

Also we will be able to install Sean's various Data directories easily which will make it easier.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Rick..
There is of course a way to do everything but.... Discussion:...
This automatically bat function was meant for users not able to copy needed files themselves. As long as the .mo files are present in the zip file users like you and me are able to copy needed files on there own requirements. So a user readme-file would discuss something about this. --- If you are able to place opencpn in a directory of your own choice you may also be able to copy required plugin files???
