I thing that you are wrong. The statute mile is not the land mile. It is an other kind of mile. American mile

See here :

CONVERSION*FOR NAUTICAL AND STATUTE MILES - BoatSafe.com

But perhaps I am also wrong myself.

So, for me, the better is to not change the name. So I translate statute mile by statute mile in french language file.

Gilletarom...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mile#Statute_mile You are probably right that that it does not need any translation.

If your intention was to provide the land mile (1609 m), it is necessary to modify OpenCPN in the next version.

If your intention was to introduce the statute mile, we also introduce, in addition, land mile in the units.

Gilletarom...
Please try to explain what has to be modified. Statute and Land mile are the same thing - 5280 feet, 1760 yards or 1609 meters. I really don't get what should we have wrong, sorry.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Hello Pavel,

I know that French is not your language. But I quote my source, and I beg you to excuse it is in French. :

Mille (unité) - Wikipédia

According to the French wikipedia, the mile statute mile and land are not exactly identical. The difference is small, but there is one. This unit has been abolished in the USA in 1959. But there is still some old maps that use this unit. That's why it still exists in different documents.

So either you want to introduce the statute mile as such, or you want to introduce the land mile.
In the first case, we must also introduce the land mile. In the second case, replace "Statute mile" by "land mile". It will be better understood internationally.

I will not introduce the U.S. Survey mile, which is what you refer to, for two reasons. Not even most of Americans are aware it exists and the difference is totally unimportant for our purposes (3.2 mm per mile).

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

In the US, I have never heard anyone say "land mile". If they are trying to discern between the two types, they talk about statute vs. nautical. Could be different in the surveying professional community, I don't know.

Intracoastal charts often have markings for SM, or statute miles. Most inland charts I see don't bother to specify. They just say "miles" and assume you know it is statute miles.

US offshore charts use nautical miles.

If "statute mile" is introduced for the welfare of American citizens, why not. In this case, I will translate as "Mile terrestre" in the French version, and everything will be fine.
