My opinion: AIS/GPS messages and abbrevations should not be translated. Look at all other plotters, you will find that they all read the same undependent of the plotters language.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

For the abbreviations it's probably the only option as there's no way to find understandable translations. I'm personally 100% happy with not translating any of the AIS terms as the English originals are more understandable to me, but the people speaking no English tend not to agree unfortunately...

Adding some kind of glossary (see e.g. Glossar | OpenCPN.de) to the included help may be a solution to help/ satisfy all ...?

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

I have posted a poll at the Norwegian OpenCPN website to hear what the users think about translating already established international maritime expressions and words.
Look at other plotters, I'm pretty sure that none of them have translated these words and expressions to the plotters language.
I will get back with the results of the poll in a week or so...

After running a poll for a small period of time it seems like we have 100% support for using international abbrevations and expressions in OpenCPN.
This poll is still running on OpenCPN Norway.

Will get back with the results in a couple of weeks.
The Norwegian translation will use International expressions as long as the majority of users wish this.

Hello,

As announced three days ago, here is an updated version of the French language file for 240-506.

That it supersedes the previous post.

Started a poll on the German OpenCPN website, too.
I have added a third option 'alternative language file'.

Here are the preliminary results from the German poll:
Should the used English abbreviations be translated into German?
Yes: 2
No : 9
alternative language file: 2

So the trend is so clearly to not translate the abbreviations.

But as I started to update the German translation/ language file I recognized that it becomes harder and harder to know to which part/ section of OCPN a certain string belongs (latest pot file contains more than 700 strings).
But this may be important (essential) for the correct translation. Another problem is that some messages are platform specific. So I could hardly ever see any Linux specific message on my Windows system.

Is there a way around this problem?
How do you handle this problem?

Is there a possibility to split the pot file into sections (just for the translation) like 'Route Manager', 'ToolBox', 'AIS window', 'Context/ Right-Click menu', etc.?

Thanks,
Gunther

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

My suggestions for the translating parties is to make a "dictionary" that explains the international abbrevations. This is much easier and at the same time it would learn the sailors the correct words and terms at sea.

I have started to do this for the norwegian community even if the poll still is 100% in favor for keeping the international abbrevations, names and expressions.

Re: OpenCPN Internationalization ( i18n )

Hello,

In France, we launched a discussion on a thread in a forum. I started the translation and I put my proposal on the wire. Sailors have answered the call and made corrections acceptable by all.
Now we have a language file which appears correctly translated for all the technical terms.
It's better because the French speak English less well than the Germans

It was no use because OpenCPN 240-506 displayed the text in English. I put an alert in the tracker and I see that Dave has developed a solution.

From my side, I added comments in the file, for many items, say for what purpose they serve. Thanks to this, if someone else takes my place, he can navigate.

I like the request of Netsurfer to split the file based on the role of the items. But it could be that it takes a lot of work to implement.

Best regards,

Gilletarom.

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe you are willing to email me the file?
Having French comments will be better than none ...

BTW: Are you using Poedit for the translation work?

Thanks,
Gunther
