Re: OpenCPN General

For an iThing you are pretty much stuck with iNavX which I liked at one time but later it got to be a PITA with no support for reinstall, etc. A version of OCPN COULD be made, for use on rooted (jailbroke is the proper term in iPhone speak) iPhones but that would limit the market to a small minority of iPhone users and would not I am sure be worth the bother.

Meanwhile, Android gets more capable and more open and just better, especially with all the alternative ROMs available. I don't see why anyone needing their phone for more than just communications and playing candy crush would prefer such a crippled device. The hardware is great, but the software severely limits what the user can do with his phone. Android rules! But I digress. I first tried OCPN on my Android running within a Linux environment even before it was released for Android and I absolutely hands down loved being able to run this great app without lugging a laptop around. Then it came out for Android and I was exstatic, because running Linux on an Android phone is a big PITA. Meanwhile I honestly think iphone is poised to go the way of the Blackberry or the Windows phone.

Re: OpenCPN General

One possible way is to get a small Linux computer like Raspberry Pi 3 running Openplotter. Use a VNC viewer in full screen mode on an iPhone or iPad to view the RPi screen over Wi-Fi. Put OpenCPN on the RPi and you effectively have OpenCPN on an iThing. You can get the RPi for <$50 US.

Here is Something that do not seems to be correct and I can not find were to correct the time zone other than in the harmonic file. Korea stations should not go to daylight time on the 11 of march but remain on KST. It remain on 9h on GMT (or UTC if you prefer). Anyone can check this?

Re: OpenCPN General

Hello all - There is a lot of detailed info on this thread but I am trying to get my head around a pretty simple setup. I want to use my laptop (Windows7) with openCPN or something similar as an "offline" planning tool, creating routes etc. To that end I have the VMH unified raster charts which are on a USB stick or at least unlocked by using the stick. When sailing I would like to use an Android tablet (Google Nexus 7).

What would be the simplest way to go here to use the same charts and preferably the same app to plan on a laptop then use on a tablet? I looked at Navionics but it seems there is not a version that will run under Windows for planning?

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Cheers

Re: OpenCPN General

For Android there is the supported OpenCPN version
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....opencpn&hl=en

and you can use the oeSENC vector charts on Android (o-charts.org) same as under the desktop version of OpenCPN.

The VMH raster charts do not run under the Android OCPN.

Re: OpenCPN General

Thanks for the reply.

So the oeSENC vector charts would run on both the laptop and tablet, both of which are running OpenCPN? Can the charts be run on both at the same time?

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN General

Yes, they can.

As with almost all licensed charts you can install them on one system plus one backup.
These are restrictions imposed by the licensors, UKHO for example.
A parallel install is one option.

VMH resolves this with the portable stick which requires the special driver installed on-the-fly before starting OpenCPN..

I would recommend that you go through the FAQs on the o-charts site.

Which is exactly the region you want to sail?

Re: OpenCPN General

Inverness should be ok concerning the coverage of the vector charts.
There some discussions about Severn and Alderney with UKHO, that should be resolved one day.

Re: OpenCPN General

OeSenc charts. What a great deal! EU is very lucky to have this resource. More on parity with our great Noaa charts for US. It would be ideal to have one or two sets for the carribean a some point. Preferably divided so two sets arent needed for common routes, perhaps north of Cuba and sourh of Cuba.

Re: OpenCPN General

HI. I use Open CPN just as you mention. I do my planning on a windows laptop and then transfer the data to a Samsung tablet for on the water use. I also have a bluetooth keyboard to make on the fly changes as needed - its a pain to try update routes and such using the touch screen. I use NOAA raster charts, download the ones I need on the PC and then copy the files, routes and such to the microSD card in my Samsung. This work great. It also eliminates having to do updates twice and keep the PC and Samsung in sync.
