Re: OpenCPN General

Maybe I overlooked it, but is there a way to set the bottom type to use abbreviations like "S" instead of Sand for example?

Also I think there is still no way to declutter soundings correct?

Correct, as far as I can tell nobody is working on it yet.

Re: OpenCPN General

I just want to use the standard abbreviations like in the raster charts to reduce clutter in the vector display

I may attempt, and as well to implement rendering the depth numbers for contours which is actually easy but difficult to do properly.

Re: OpenCPN General

using latest version on MacBook. How do I change the text color in the XTE route window? It's now red, and I can't read it against the black background. I'm asking about the little box that pops up when a route is active, giving the option to show the "highway" and the TTG, RNG, XTE ext.... can I change the color of the data?

Doug...
Toolbox -> User Interface, set font and color for Console Value according to your personal preference.

Re: OpenCPN General

Just wondering if anyone has come across any problem printing multiple copies of a chart. I had the need to print a race plan for a local regatta recently and ended up with 100 copies instead of the 10 that I actually asked for. I then discovered that if I requested 1 print I got 1 copy printed, requesting 2 printed 4 copies and 5 printed 25 copies. I also discerned that it appeared to be printing in batches of the number of copies I requested.

By the way I am using the OpenCPN 4.0 stable version on Windows 10.

No Help information for Chart Downloader

Information on the Chart Downloader plugin seems to be missing from the OpenCPN Help file.

Any chance this will be added in the future?

Re: OpenCPN General

It should be available from within the plugin. Maybe we need a note to that effect.

Hi Dave:
We have used Opencpn on our windows 7 laptops for years but one crashed forcing us to go to windows 10 platform. We are unable to successfully download Opencpn to windows 10. Is Opencpn compatible with windows 10? It says it is however when you actually go to download it says that is works on up to windows 8 only. A little contradiction on their own site.
Hopefully you can help us out.

Thanks, Lon

Lon...
Yes, we can help you out - I hope you are now happy with the download page and feel safer downloading and installing on Windows 10 (Which of course is supported)

Re: OpenCPN General

This is a question about communication between OpenCpn and an nmea 2000 network. Last spring I connected my PC to the SimNet network on my boat using a serial to USB device and a Simrad AT10 network to nmea 0183 interface. This was part of the installation of a Simrad 4G radar that uses the PC as its screen. The compass required is a SimNet device connected to the network, so the network to PC was needed to get the heading to OpenCpn on the PC. The GPS in the system is an nmea 0183 device and gets its output onto the network through the AT10. The AT10 is half duplex, so the information going through it onto the network does not appear in the information coming off to go to the PC. A second serial to USB connection was used to get the GPS information into the PC. This all worked well, and I enjoyed having a radar overlay on my navigation charts through the summer. Thank you very much for the excellent software, and also for support in getting the radar working.

Just before setting out cruising, I added an Icom M506 radio that has AIS reception and outputs the AIS data onto a network as an nmea 2000 device. I couldn't get this to work. I recently got back to working on this issue, and learned from Mario, a technical support person at Icom Canada, that an nmea 2000 device will only talk to another nmea 2000 device, instead of streaming everything onto the buss when it its turn comes. I can see the advantage of this more controlled style of conversation for large volumes of data e.g. AIS data flow. I then bought an Actisense NGT-1-USB device to interface the PC to the buss. This device causes the PC to appear as an nmea 2000 device on the network. This works well in terms of hardware, and shows all the AIS information in an nmea reader utility program provided by the manufacturer. I have attached a screenprint. But I didn't get any input to OpenCpn. Either I'm not doing it right, or OpenCpn doesn't support this.

Can you guide me if I'm not doing it right, or might you consider interfacing to nmea 2000?

Much more information about interfacing to nmea 2000 here:

Re: OpenCPN General

Two problems I'm having:
I tried to sign in on the OpenCpn main page (OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage) and found I had forgotten my passord. I followed the reset passord process and got a message saying a message had been sent to me by email, but no such message came. Tried a second time, same result.

I tried to make a donation by credit card, again starting at the main page but couldn't because it asks for my province (Canada) but won't allow me to enter anything by abbreviations for US states.
