Broach..

You can download ready-made POI´s here from around the world, and also an extended list of icons used in the POI´s:

4shared folder - POI.gpx FILES

http://www.4shared.com/folder/gjJL9N49/UserIcons.html

Feel free to correct/alter/extend the lists of .gpx POI´s to update the library.

Any suggestion?
Have a look at gpsd. It takes care of rebroadcasting the data from a GPS. OpenCPN can be set to receive from gpsd.

Hey I installed 3.0. Where are the plugins for UGRIB and the Dashboard. Do the old one's still work?

Installing OpenCPN 3.0 should give you these two plugins updated and compatible.
Enable em in the toolbox and all should be well.

Ok, In previous versions I had to go to the website. Didn't see the ones for 3.0 there. I like this better. Thanks much

Re: OpenCPN General

I have just installed 3.0. I have downloaded all of NOAA's U.S. charts. It appears to me that every chart is going through an uncompress process. I noticed this to some degree in 2.6, but it is with every click of the mouse, basically, in 3.0. Is there a shortcut to this? I selected both of the buttons in charts for Scan charts and update database and force database rebuild, but it sill is going though this uncompressing thing. Any help would be appreciated.

gpshephe,
you are downloading the NOAA charts as "ZIP" files, correct? "unzip" them and then place the uncompressed kap into your charts folder. Windoze has a utility built in todo this (even try a right-click on the" . zip"!) but there are several other applications available to download available..."7-Zip" is very popular.

Re: OpenCPN General

Yes, I unzipped them into my charts directory. It's after I've unzipped them and after I ran the Database load options. When I'm browsing in OpenCPN is when it occurs. Each time I select a new area (CHART ) in OpenCPN I get a dialog box that states something about DEPARE, SEAARE, LNDARE, and it runs a counter, maybe the number of objects in the CHART? I appears to be uncompressing them for first time use. Could be some setting in W7, I don't know. Just curious if anyone else has seen this.

Every vector chart needs to be processed the first time you use them.
It's all explained in the documentation. Installing Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Re: OpenCPN General

....just as an aside for those that have the old Garmin 12XL

I noticed recently that O outputs marks/waypoints to it beautifully without having to change to GRMN/GRMN mode. ... of course the limited name length applies...
(those that have these know what I mean)

Re: OpenCPN General

I managed tonight to upgrade to 3.0 in Ubuntu 12.04 and I am working on the South China Sea ENC's.

I am very impressed with OpenCPN, and convinced the owner of the F/V Kaylie which I will be running during Dungeness Crab Season out of Crescent City, CA to forgo buying a proprietary plotter and try this instead.

Very impressive!

Re: OpenCPN General

You turn off chart quilting (F9) and zoom in to the area where the chart is. Even if OpenCPN chooses another one to show, the one you want to see should be available in the chartbar at the bottom of the screen, so just click on the respective rectangle to switch to it.
