Re: OpenCPN General

Yes, correct.
You have switched off the Windows feature "Show file extension names for known extensions" which is sadly the default in Windows.
Some known extensions are .dll, .exe, .ini, .log and so on.
When not shown the file name extensions you may find files with the same name in one directory which is not possible in any operating system.
So please switch the supressing of file name extensions always off.

Re: OpenCPN General

Joshua,
do you think you could dig the deleted files out from the trash and post them to me? I would really like to reproduce this crash to finally get rid of it...

Re: OpenCPN General

Have you looked at Sea Clear's charting software. We were able to scan a chart and then locate it on a grid and save it in a format that Sea Clear and Open CPN like.

Re: OpenCPN General

Are there small scale charts of the Pacific? Something to fill in the gaps when one zooms out a little?

Have a look at the New Zealand charts thread. The NZ charts cover much of the SW Pacific.

Summer 2011 testing OCPN v 2.5

After two and an half month sailing in the Baltic and North Seas I can only compliment the makers of this very good navigation program again.

I tested under Windows XP SP3 and with the CM93 chart set

Comments:

1) Zooming in/out sometimes causes delays of over one minute before the next chart data set comes alive (maybe due to impatient handling of mousewheel)

2) GRIB files plugin could be set so that it automatically reopens the last (sub)file accessed

3) Tracking and Active Route lines are the same coulor which is sometimes confusing (maybe colors could be optionally chosen)

4) In vector chart (CM93) settings from the toolbar, we can set things like SCAMIN, ATON labels, META objects etc. I cannot find a place where the definitions of these terms are explained and thus am not able to use these settings. What do they mean?

All of the above is of minor importance and safe an effective navigation (including the use of AIS) is a joy with OCPN.

I carry the program always with me on a USB stick and gave it away to at least to twenty new users during my sailing vacation. To my amazement I twice ran into a rather elderly skipper who was not really computer litterate (according to himself) but happilly already a user of OCPN. Congratulations for that achievement also.

On my computers the track line is magenta and the Active Route line is red.

Peter
that should not happened. i have cm93/ocpn on acer extensa laptop (4gb memory) and zooming (or skewing) is instantly. same with "ecdis" (8gb memory) on my boat. working flawlessly.
and i used it every single day, (sometimes for several hours) from may until fortnight ago.

on the other hand i also have at home cm93/ocpn on the 10 year old pc (1gb memory) zooming (or skewing) is slow, it takes up to 30 seconds delays, sometimes even "not responding"...

i think that depend of the "amount" of memory your laptop/pc have.

On my install (XP) they both appear as red also. I always have to manually go in and change the current track color to magenta manually.

It would be nice to be able to set the default color for tracks, even if it had to be done in the ini file.

Re: Summer 2011 testing OCPN v 2.5

I tested this again at home with a faster machine and Windows Vista. The in/out zooming gave no problems. So it must be the small computer and processor on board. Thanks for pointing this out to me

I have a computer onboard with 1.6 GHz processor and 2 GB in RAM but I see a delay in zooming up to 30 sec when zooming the first time, second time it goes much faster. Running XP SP3 and opencpn 2.5. What spec is needed to have the zoom running smoothly?

Have you read the documentation Vector Chart Display | Official OpenCPN Homepage?
