Hello Dave and everyone on the forum.
After many years of using Maxsea from Ver 7 to 11 with AIS install hassles :-( I am delighted with OPen CPN on XP and the easy install with AIS and GPS connections :-) Now will try to download for Ubuntu 9.10

Extended sea trial of OCPN 2.1.0

Just returned from 3 weeks at sea (North Sea Netherlands-Norway vv)
Tested the current 2.1.0 Build 624 release under Windows XP-SP3 with CM93 2010 chart set.

Comments:

1) when ship is in *center* position the ship moves over the chart.
Ship should stay fixed in center and chart should move
(The look-ahead mode works fine)

2) If the Windows taskbar is set to*locked*, the GRIB Dialog function
does not show when the grib button is clicked. Instead of the dialog
function showing up the upper top bar (light blue) swithches from light
blue to blue.

3) Leg/Route info is not showing days if trip or leg last over 24 hrs.
Dampening of data is also required here as our 350 mile trip lasted
anything from 2 to 6 days (or rather 48 - 144 hrs, not countin minutes)

4) Blue top bar (Windows uses this for the program name only I think) does
not change clolor when in night view. This top bar radiates far to much
light at night.

5) When changing watches (specially at night) you need the actual time.
This could be displayed in large font in the top bar of OCPN between the
HELP icon and the GPS icon. I am happy with any program feature that
assists me in not having to look for my glasses ;-)

OCPN worked very good. The AIS feature in the shipping lanes was of great assitance to our safe navigation.

Thanks a lot to all the program wizzards.

One Mile Behind

My Asus eee Box with an atom processor and Ubuntu can't keep up and the 2.1.0 version of opencpn. The display was showing my location one mile behind my actual position.

The Opencpn settings included one route, tracking on, course up, lookahead, AIS on.

It appears that all input goes into a fifo buffer that gets way behind creating a situation where location of the vessel icon on the screen is not even close to your actual location. Likely many routes points and track points add to the problem.

This is somewhat disconcerting at best. Having a 25 knot crusing speed likely doesn't help either.

On the plus side I am a total convert to Opencpn from Maptech. Will never go back.

I have wriiten shell scripts that have converted all of my Maptech Routes and Maptech Tracks to Opencpn GPX format if anyone is interested.

Also, I have a script that creates a GPX great circle route between two points with 100nm way points if any one is interested. Used this for a Mexico to Hawaii trip earlier this year.

Also, have converted many scanned charts to BSB format and likely can help others if need be.

Thanks Dave

try to switch off "show chart outlines" in settings. this helped a lot in speeding up with my slow pentium 800.
and try the beta-version 2.2.823 which is faster.

ps, are you shure that your gps is ok (fast enough) ?

Hi, I just bought a new laptop would like to install the software. But when I go to the download tab of OpenCPN home page, internet explorer cannot open the page. Would anyone know what might be the problem?

Nobeltec Radar

Can OpenCPN be used with Nobeltec InSight Radar (IR2) or do you have to use Nobeltecs Nav program with the Nobeltec Radar. I am looking to utilize my Comptuter for multifunction navigation. but do not want to purchase another nobeltec nav program.

Thanks
