What site the info is on is not important at all I would say. But when the bug tracker has had about 10 updates in the last month, and the beta thread has ~40 pages of posts mixed together to wade through, I give up. Maybe it's just me being rigid and boring... :-)

I can see what you're saying, from a beta tester's perspective the current model has been successful in getting humble users such as myself involved.

Nonetheless, as far as I can see a number of external contributions by third parties were quickly integrated by Dave (route manager, anchor alarm, libgps come to mind). So if you have a certain improvement in mind it might be worthwhile just getting it out there and forgetting about the best practice bit for the time being.

I think the project would benefit from aligning itself to the FOSS templates. Have an organized discussion forum, mailing lists and issue tracking.
As to the discussion forum, I actually find it more inclusive to have it on a popular sailing forum. Bug tracking on sf.net hasn't been used comprehensively as the interface is rather slow and Dave is so fast at fixing those bugs Perhaps a dev mailing list will prove to be useful as and when more programmers are donating their time, but as its just the one at the moment it might get a bit boring for Dave talking to himself..

Jesper, you have a point. We all really want more developers to join in, and I'm sure all this will evolve from the present situation. For now, I think the best is if you mail Dave directly and discuss the situation with him.
You will find his mail address at the top of the toolbox author tab.

GPX files

I have some waypoints, particularly of pirate attacks that I translated via GPS Utility. I can read them on Shipplotter but they do not show up on Open CPN. I just downloaded and am playing with it for familiarization before I switch from Maxsea. Like the way it does not stop at 180 longitude.

Can you upload the file (add '.doc' at the end for uploading here), please?

I am a little bit confused.
You first post was titled "GPX files".
What you have posted looks like NMEA sentences, but is not any valid kind of GPX file/ format.
GPX files are XML files, which look like this e.g.:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<gpx version="1.1" creator="OpenCPN" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd" xmlns:opencpn="http://www.opencpn.org">
    <rte>
        <name>Villagarcia - Ausfahrt</name>
        <number>2</number>
        <rtept lat="42.600689" lon="-8.769895">
            <time>2010-05-19T09:53:22Z</time>
            <name>001</name>
            <sym>diamond</sym>
            <type>WPT</type>
            <extensions>
                <opencpn:prop>A,1,1,0,1</opencpn:prop>
            </extensions>
        </rtept>
        .
        .
        .
    </rte>
</gpx>
So maybe I got you wrong about what you wanna do?

Gunther

Ehat I have are a list of waypoints which I read on maxsea. I have another computer for backup which I loaded Opencpn. I want to read the same waypoint and track files I have on Maxsea therrefore I used GPSutillity to save the PTF files in GPX format. I have not been able to read any waypoints although tracks show up. I read somewhere on the forum after I submitted this post someone else was also having difficulties getting waypoints but he did get the text from the waypoint. I sort of think it is the symbol set used but I am not familiar enough with the program o delve deeply. I will keep working on it. I have used GPS utility for several years to move data around and this is the first time with unexpected results.

Joe,
if I remember well the other thread, the problem was that the GPX didn't tell OpenCPN which visual symbol to use for the imported waypoints and there was no default. To confirm that, please post the GPX file as attachment to the post (you have to change the extension to .doc as the forum doesn't allow you to attach files with extensions it doesn't like). As Gunther pointed out, the text you posted is not GPX at all... If this is the case I will write some tool to "fix" the GPX to work in a day or two as I get some time.

The file I posted is the file GPSutility saved as GPX when I loaded my PTF. I know of no other wy to get maxsea ptf in another format. Could be a problem inGPS Utility but I have used the purchased version for ove 5 years with no problems.

Strange thing, I looked at another file exported by GPS Utility from Maxsea and imported as GPX file into OpenCPN. he rack shows up but not the waypoints, however when I right click on a know area with a waypoint I get a dialoge that allows me to edit the waypoint properties, I changed he symbol, checked show name box and it still does not show up on the chart.

Well, it is difficult to help without knowing/ seeing the data/ file you are working with ...
So please
  • post at least a part of the used file or
  • upload the pertaining file

Maptech Navigation Photos (*.sph) File Format

Hi,

Does anyone know about Maptech's Navigation Photos (*.sph) file format? I want to convert my Google *.jpg to *.sph.

I can then overlay the photos on top of my existing charts using Nobletec, Coastal Explorer, Chart Navigator, ....

I can already convert them to BSB Charts (*.kap) but navigation photo overlay is much better way of displaying the information.

I am able to get the conversion to work, I would gladly provide the source code to the OpenCPN team.

Thanks.

Send a message via Skype™ to sinbad7
Perhaps you could try Pov-Ray

POV-Ray: Download

They are one of a few using this format and may have a conversion facility to other formats. The program is free...
