OpenCPN GE Plugin - what am I doing wrong!?

I've spent a few hours trying to get the GE plugin to work, but have failed.

I had it working once before on another machine, so I'm not completely out of my depth.

I'm running a new(ish) install of OpenCPN 4.0.0 and the latest GE Plugin.
I'm running windows 10 and GE Pro (free).

The GE window opens inside OpenCPN, but there is nothing inside the window... it's just a semi transparent window with no imagery inside.

I've removed the title bar and whatever else in GE (CTRL+ALT+T / CTRL+ALT+B).

I've tried running GE in Open GL and DirectX (a problem I had in a previous install)

The OpenCPN log shows nothing unusual.

I'm stumped.

What am I doing wrong?
I feel like there is some basic step that I am supposed to do... like switch to an ENC chart, or use a certain zoom level...

If you have installed the latest version of GE (7.1, if I remember correctly), it does not contain the API the GE plugin uses to connect to it anymore. Get rid of it and downgrade.
