OpenCPN for other Applications

Hi

I have a doubt about openCPN .Can i use this opensource for other purposes like in car or other vehicles.I heard about dead reckoning and its now used in OpenCPN. Can i use openCPN for my purpose. I already build OpenCPN in Linux platform and viewed its starting window in PC. I want to check with GPS so i can see my position and all featured described in OpenCPN forum. Can anyone help me to find out am i doing right or not.If its right what i have to do next.
I only want to track my location and plotting my ways in chart.I think i will get positive feedback.

Thanks and regards
Abin

OpenCPN will certainly track your position, however it does not currently support maps (on land). I've used it for long flights.

You could use use open street maps converted to kap, so yes, but it is not really intended or designed for land use.

When I use it to track a flight, of course the gshhs background is seen and useful. You would probably like more detail.
I think you should try Seans suggestion. Then if it works well prehaps it can be automated.
Sean or someone else had mention tile support which might help too. The main focus will remain marine however.

Hi
rgleason thanks for your reply.I saw advanced option in chart conversion and i saw a website http://www.venturefarther.com/ which converts google map to kap format.I took a sample google map portion and converted it to kap format and added its path to chart directory. Is it right ?or can anyone can suggest better way to add land map to OpenCPN.

Open source Terra Incognita does the same with a wide selection of source maps/sat images.

Re: OpenCPN for other Applications

Not too sure about DR for automotive applications.

The whole basis of DR is maintaining heading and speed for measured time.
On land the road/track is master with heading and speed constantly varying.

Assuming that you have a decent road or topographical map in KAP format you will be able to have a "moving map" display of where the vehicle is and not much more.
