OpenCPN for Mac

An unrelated post, but it is about OpenCPN on MAC:
I am trying to install tides data from WXtide. As far as I see from other threads the tides data needs to be in a directory TCdata or TCuserdata that is located in the same directory where you find OPenCPN.ini file.
However i look, I cannot locate that file or any of the directories mentioned where i should look for it.

My system has MOC OS 10.7.5 and OpenCPN 3.0.2, the system uses Dutch language.

Could anybody point me in the right direction where to place the Harmonics files?

Hi Olmen, OPenCPN.ini is in your user preferences folder -

users/olmen/Library/Preferences/OPenCPN.ini

Apple have now made this a hidden folder bless um in lion onward.
The free - small -"tinker tool" app will help u reveal it. (Google)
Then just drop the TCdata folder.

Goto Finder menu "Go to Folder" and type into the dialog: /Users/your-name/Library
Then create the folder name UserTCData there.
You may create subfolders in UserTCData which holds different harmonic data. These data consist of a file HARMONIC and a file HARMONIC.IDX.

Ok... I hope this is the right place for this. I've just downloaded OpenCPN 3.1.1105 for my Mac running 10.7.5. I know it's beta. I was hoping to run OpenCPN on a USB stick so I can transfer it between desktop and laptop. I've seen instructions on this for Win/Linux but haven't been able to find anything for Mac. When I do run OpenCPN from the USB stick it continues to use/create the preference files on the hard drive. Any thoughts? Should this work on a Mac?

I am running Mac OS X.4........ (Tiger) and I have no intentions of 'upgrading' to any later cats)

Is there a version available for download that would work?

I downloaded from the official site but were unable to open the software once downloaded.

Guess Mac ECN is the other/only option otherwise...

It might be possible, but more likely something won't work. AFAIK no one has tried to build a 10.4u (universal) version. I will try to find the time to take a look, but you shouldn't be optimistic. If it doesn't work there will likely be nothing I can do to fix it. Do you have a PPC or Intel box?

Thanks for the reply, but don't spend too much effort on it. I was simply thinking that there could still be a place to download an older version that's all. Back-up purpose. I am on a MacBook Pro Intel about 6 y o but still going strong. A real workhorse and top o the line when it came. It will be my last Apple computer it seems, since Leopard and onwards goes a path I don't sympathize with. I do have 2 pc's for navigation and Airmail solely and apart from that it will be LINUX onwards.

But that is beyond this thread.

It sounds like you may have the same vintage MBP as I do (Core 2 Duo). I agree with your attitude about the OS X "updates" but find that Snow Leopard (10.6.8) is my sweet spot, as it is for a lot of others. Lion and Mountain Lion are not my cup of tea either. The problem is that Apple did a lot of strange things to BSD Unix when it first made OS X, and then kept undoing their mistakes with each release so that by Snow Leopard it was mostly reasonable. Then they got serious about messing with the GUI, which is where I get off the train... If your MBP can run Snow Leopard I would recommend you try it, if only on an external drive. Pretty much all current Mac software runs on Snow Leopard. Just like XP in the Windows world, so many folks are either unable or unwilling to "upgrade" that Apple can't pull the plug on it.

I have found that Airmail and other Windows programs work just fine on Linux with WINE - no need to keep Windows around. Worst case, dual boot Windows/Linux. I am a fan of Linux Mint - try it on an external box, or use a virtual machine with (free) VirtualBox. And of course OCPN works on all of the above - thanks Dave!

As for a 10.4 build, I have serious doubts about a PPC version, but it might be possible for x86 code. I'll try to build for 10.6.8 first, and if I can do that I will work back to 10.4. I do have the required resources to try it. OTOH you might relent as far as Snow Leopard...

If it is only for backup, then put VirtualBox on the MBP and install Linux Mint. Then put OCPN on that. Also put WINE in Mint and install Airmail.

I installed 3.2.0 on a macbook with Mountain Lion. RAM - 8 gig.

Screen scroll is very slow, each refresh is delayed.

While in Measuring and close to a screen edge, the screen starts scrolling in he measure direction and never stopes until I close the program.

Tried to increase memory cash but cannot find memory or cash line in the ini file as if they are not there.

What CPU and graphics card does the MacBook have? Is that one of the Intel GPU models? 8 GB should be plenty of RAM.

Sure, it is an Intel macbook with graphic card as:
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
Type: GPU
Bus: PCI
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Smooth scrolling has no effect.
Open GL as "On" has somewhat negative effect but not very prominent.

I have no idea what that all means, and I know nothing about testing software, but I'll be happy to follow directions and execute whatever tests I can to help.

Version 3.2 on my mac book not responding every time I click on eye icon in the rout manger. I have to restart the program.

Furthermore there is no application name attached to the OpenCPN symbol in the "Force Quit Applications" list because the file Info.plist of the OpenCPN bundle is wrong (see your screenshot).
There are so many bugs in the OpenCPN Mac version that the Flyspray will explode to name them all. There are more than 450 faults detected here in the original code...
