OpenCPN for idiots

Idiots being me. I love this system overall but I have a few issues. HP notepad running Windows XP. 353 dongle with USB. That's it. When I transition (zoom) some of the screens go blue and then come back at the next zoom. Thoughts or if additional information is needed I will respond later today. Love the utility of it but I'm a Class A technophobe.

Re: OpenCPN for idiots

"Idiots" we all are until asked questions and learned more.
Here some "silly" questions for a start:
What XP, service pack 3 i hope?
What Opencpn, version 4.8.4 I hope?
Do you use OpenGL? (Tools->View->Advanced-> OpenGL On/Off?) Try Off if On.
What charts do you use?

Re: OpenCPN for idiots

How much memory in the computer?
How much memory is being used at the time it goes blank?
(Your XP version of Task Manager may have an advanced button in Task Manager that will give you some of this information. Alternatively I believe there are some smaller XP Utility programs that could help you to find out.

OpenCPN goes blank sometimes when it is running out of memory or doing something intensive.

Are any other program open?

Can you shut down any of those, including startup programs?

Re: OpenCPN for idiots

Now that I'm home here are some particulars.
Open CPN version 4.0.0
Windows XP version 2002
Service pack 3.
Processor 1600 MHz
1.75 GB Ram.
Charts are BSB Root?

Antique huh?
Let's start with this. I'm willing to blow the memory and start over if need be.

Re: OpenCPN for idiots

First install the latest OpenCPN version from
http://opencpn.navnux.org/4.8.4/opencpn_4.8.4_setup.exe

You can install that one in parallel if like to do so (and understand what you are doing) or patching the completely outdated version you are running.

The PC should not be an issue.
