OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Hello testers...

The 4.1.718 Beta Test release of OpenCPN for Android is available for download now.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/1dy98qniyi...1.718.apk?dl=0

Changelog:
33. Correct small scale ownship position rendering
34. Improve StatusBar font and size selection logic.
35. Improve Tide/Current detailed display dialog layout.
36. Correct Vector chart symbol rendering to avoid display fading on certain devices.
37. Various display and useability improvements.

Release Beta 4.1.718

Release Notes:

There is very little new functionality in this Beta.
The intent is to further stabilize the GUI, and improve the general "daily drivability" of the app.

Consequently, I would like testers to be fussy, and even compulsive, about the useability of this release. Any "unexpected" UI events are worthy of mention, please. Especially hangs or crashes....

We are nearing the point of "Feature Freeze" for OA 4.2, so if there is some Feature that you can't live without, now would be a good time to mention it.

Please check and clear your Flyspray tasks for the OA Beta, if possible. I will unilaterally clear some older issues that are known to have been resolved in previous Betas, if you don't mind.

Thanks in advance for all your valuable feedback.
Good luck
Dave

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

I tried this version on my 7" tablet en it seems to work well although I did not test it much.

I tried it also on my small Samsung phone (Android 4.0.4. with a display of 240 x 320 pixels. This phone is too small to use for navigation but could be a backup in an emergency). Opencpn installs slowly but I reach the stage where I see the basic map and I am able to scroll it. 2 problems:

First I cannot reach the option button (to choose the directory for the maps): in portrait mode, I see only the MOB en the boat buttons, in landscape mode, the course button appears as well. Could the option button be placed before the course button or, better, have the buttons shifted left to give enough place for the option button to appear?

Second, after several minutes, the screen turns black, the phone seems frozen for a while then the phone restart (I have to input the simcard code, etc...). I tried several clean installs without better results. Perhaps the phone is not powerful enough although I can run the terrestrial navigation software Sygic without problems ...

Attached is the last log file. Please change the .doc extension back to .log (I had to circumvent the limitations of the attachments ....)

Hubert...

The log looks entirely normal. A clean shutdown, without crash.

When O stops, what was the last thing you were doing? Any consistent pattern?

Thanks
Dave

Dave..

just coming back from lunch, wiping away the "protection screen" and the message popping up that OCPN has stopped. So no user input required - was the same the last time.
"Clean shutdown" is strange as there is no way to stop the program. It is Android that stops it - or?

Dave...
Looks pretty good here. The only problem observed so far is that the chart info pop-up shown after longish push on the piano stays on eternally.
The chart display scale factor would deserve a max value of 150 on my hiDPI screen - the soundings are not bigger than ~1.5mm even with the highest current setting.

Was it quiet when it died, or were you working with it? Last actions, in general?

Thanks

Dave...

looks like death after hibernation.
I'm trying now to keep the system "alive", waiting if something happens.

Confirmed...
After hibernation (=black screen) going back to the welcome screen and wiping this one away, OCPN crashes.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Installed w/o issues.

Light objects working 99% correctly. No fading away and they render nicely, but still dissappear suddenly at the very top of the screen.

Curved sections of marked passage dissappear as they did earlier, aka light sectors.

Arrowhead passage lines obey scaling factor only after visiting O settings menu in the basic mode. (I like this, because I prefer smaller arrowheads)

Once I managed to get the android menu bar black after adjusting waypoint properties. I could not repeat the behavior. Despite being black the (...) worked.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Hubert...

I have experimented with hibernation recovery. In many tries, I have only crashed once. And I don't know what was different in this case.
Do you have any reliable way to crash on recovery after hibernation? Does it happen every time?

What I do is this:
1. Android settings->Display Hide after 1 minute.
2. start OA, open a chart, let the device sit still for 1 minute. Screen blanks OK.
3. Touch power button, swipe Android welcome screen, and there is OA, ready to go.

Does GPS on/off affect your results?

Thanks
Dave
