I've tried to find out the cause of this Win (not Linux) behavior but didn't succeed. To test 4.1.... I like to use it while sailing and that's reliable enough for my needs except I sometimes like to use the AIS alert feature.
Please if someone has the time look into this?
It's probably implemented in commit: "Improve AIS Alert dialog layout size/position."

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
Pavel,
On my 'real' linux box (my boat pc) using a portable install it works for a little while, but keeps loosing the charts. I always get a crash
Code:

The program 'opencpn' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
(Details: serial 121442 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
The problem is there is no development environment on the boat PC to back trace. I will see if I can get another install certificate for my build (the one I coding on) pc and see if I can recreate it there. This was with a new build of the s63_pi using wxWidgets 3.0.2. I did have to make some changes to get it not to cause assert errors all the time (these have been pushed to the s63_pi git).

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
I have yet another new-to-me device...Samsung GT-N7000 "Note" (comes with a pen) I think it's the first one made. But appears to be updated to Android 4.1.2
It's Rooted.
I am having issues loading charts. OA dies without a whimper after loading charts....yes, I am making several "normal" attempts...ie: From a new install, or another after all OA data apparently flushed,using a file manager which sees just about everything on this rooted device(yikes.)
I have tried loading charts from:
mnt/extSdCard
storage/extSdCard
I have tried moving a new install of OA to sd card before loading charts.
I have tried loading charts from storage/sdcard0 and mnt/sdcard0 too.
Log doesn't offer much except the very common
"Error: Failed to set temporary file permissions (error 1: Operation not permitted)
as the last entry.
However, I know Editing the conf file will work. I have had OA running very well on this device when I got to that...
I have developer mode enabled but do not find any "tombstones" or ability to create crash dumps using instructions seen earlier in the thread

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
oh, and here's an oddity hopefully unique to my 2nd hand rooted device.... When I move OA to the sdcard, he drags along some peculiar baggage; It's happened every time.
folders not apparently relevant to O ...Webkit,images,kioskmode...
hmm.
ADDDD. some screengrabs with CONF file EDITED to give me some CHARTS
note the weird soundings cutoff but revel in the nice grid

Happy...
So, what edits do you make to the config file that makes it work?
Thanks

@line 4
@line 445
Code:
[ChartDirectories]
ChartDir1=/mnt/extSdCard/cm93_LocalONLY^
and for the heck of it, I toss in my own mark icon
@line 204
Code:
DefaultWPIcon=Yellow Buoy
These things won't get "written" into "conf" unless I do it, no matter how many times I browse or click things. There are may be more that aren't getting written in that I haven't noticed. Maybe I have forgotten something, or the hack on the phone as Root previous owner did is the problem...or even " disabled apps" because OA hums along without this effort on the Acer z220(Android 5.0)
I saved a fresh install log and conf for you...I think these are them.
opencpn.conf.doc
opencpn.log.doc
added: oh, and also I get rid of the "Show depth units" .
Now, what's interesting is that with MY file inserted, some of the toolbox settings changes are peristent but others not...I just changed to Mariners standard (All selected) and it worked, but when I tried to put the Show Depth Units to ON, it went black-a quiet crash. No droll message appears as it might on the Z220
ADD. spoke too soon. When I used the Toolbox from the toolbar, versus above using the simpler Settings menu invoked from android menu, I was able to get Depth Units appearing.

Is the "update" stock or from a custom ROM?
Is there in the Settings module an option related to Super Root?
There's some useful information about the GT-N7000 "Note" you may want to read here: [FAQ] [Q&A] [Noob Friendly] HELP THREAD … | Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 | XDA Forums

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
Thanks for the link, Wrong. Yes I have something called "Superuser" aboard and have been able to communicate cmds from the laptop as well via adb shell...
but 99% of the stuff on XDA' I really don't want to do...yet.
I really shouldn't have mentioned this phone here, because...well, it's not a good beta-tester phone, being off the Normal Usr track. Once a phone is wHacked, it's on its own, eh?
But that said, it does appear to be working ok and fairly normally. It was very cheap but I only had to do some twiddly-tinkery repairs to it ...

On the config file:
Are you able to make sticky configuration changes, and the config file works OK except for chart directory specification?

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
@bdcat
Dave, that's a hard one!
There's something going on when I use the "android" menu key that invokes the simple settings Versus the advanced "ToolBox" bar. Maybe just when the Advanced mode is enabled....
For instance, I just tried the simple menu to get the Depth Units "Meters" Flag on as a test. CRASH and restart, no Depth units.
HOWEVER, I can do it from the Advanced Toolbox. AND I can uncheck it after awhile in the toolbox and that works too
another example:Just before logging on here, I had to change the path of chart files. OA wouldn't do it, advanced or not, so I had to clone the conf to the pc as a new file, write in the chart paths and then copy it back to the phone after deleting the old one. Then start OA updating database and finally refreshing chart groups(which worked fine)
I am wondering if something doesn't change the read-only Yes/No flag on this file at some point so it's ongoing to see if the file "hardens up". I just removed some charts...shutOA down after a decent interval of update database then scroll about. Now, play with a different app awhile..tum tee tum (time passes)and will see by starting OA and trying to reload them again with the toolbox...AHA. a crash. No message. so I expect the flag has dropped.
ADD more detail: Ican browse to the folder,and OA sees everything and offers the OK on a bar at the bottom. I tap the bar, it goes black. Gone.
The conf file shows the directory deleted and obviously OA has been writing stuff into it since I did.
I will get the the log for you in a bit...

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
opencpn.log.doc
a copy to pc of the ".conf" file is still writeable. It hasn't gone read-only yet. But don't forget, it's mine made in noteTab, not the original.
Add in case it's useful..
chartlist.dat.doc

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
Miss me? haha. Well, I tried again to load those charts and it worked this time. After OK the database refreshed and all is well except my brain. But it has happened enough that it's not a one-off.
I am even wondering if the phone isn't to blame ..screen/sleep is set to 2 minutes. I'll try 5. There's a thingy in here too that is supposed to watch you watch the screen before shutting down but it.s disabled

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
However the new compass window works with Mac OS X only with DrawBitmap false and not true in compass.cpp:
Code:
#ifdef __WXOSX__
dc.DrawBitmap( m_StatBmp, m_rect.x, m_rect.y, false );
#else
dc.DrawBitmap( m_StatBmp, m_rect.x, m_rect.y, true );
#endif
