Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

So been trying this beta while sailing the last week or so. Using CM93 charts and when the chart detail is set anywhere above the minimum the redraw is so slow O is unusable. Previous build was better here. (Same on Galatx Tab S, Galaxy S6 and Sony Xpehira)

Also tried using a Bluetooth mouse (2 x types to make sure it not the mouse) on the Tab S - can NOT scroll or zoom using the mouse - also delayed reaction when 'clicking'. Only happens in O all other apps are fine with the mouse.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

I wanted to give OpenCPN Beta 4.1.718 for Android a try on a Sony Xperia Z tablet (SGP321).
The program started correctly, but pressing the settings tab every time causes a program crash. I tried it first on Android 4.4, same after an upgrade to 5.0.2, so no further testing possible at the moment...

It would be sure helpful if you can try to show the crash report as described here by Dave: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1876933

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Thank you, bcn!
I finally managed to create a crash dump.
I searched all the 14 MB file for something similar like it was mentioned in Daves post.
Nothing similar. The only info that might be useful seems this to me:

My Nexus 7 2013 (Android 5.1.1 LMY48G) has the same difficulty. Only the Degree without any decimal and minutes are shown.

re:
"chart detail is set anywhere above the minimum"

More info, please. Do you mean the slider on ExpertSettings->Charts->VectorCharts->cm93 detail ?

Thanks
Dave

I think maybe opengl works on an x86 android build in the emulator but I didn't try it yet.

The arm emulator is very slow and doesn't support opengl (even software emulated)

Maybe you can also improve the development environment or documentation for how to build opencpn on android as I know this is a deterring factor for others. Basically if you clone the opencpn source code you will find a directory "buildandroid" which has some readme files explaining things. You could ask questions here if you get stuck.
Currently all my machines are either Android or Windows, so I first have to build a Linux machine...
Which distro is prefered?

+1 on that.
If O has to load more than 10 cells , the time to use is minutes.
Using :
Standard
4 Colors
CM93 Deatail Level 50% (slider)
Has compiled OA myself and it's the call to RenderCharts(gldc, chart_get_region) taking up the time.

Does'nt really like the UseCanvasPanning but disabling it ,makes OA very slow.

Hi,Dave. a Quick note from wide continental spaces where the internet don't roam...
Yes, wpts/marks cannot be moved. That is, there is a way to do this on computer...as in, clickndrag a mark/wpt to be dragged to a new location. This seems especially useful on the android version where a route "bluntly"made on a tablet's small screen can then be corrected later when zoomed in on the route...

The toolbox option "lock wpts" should be kept though.
One does not want to be dragging wpts by accident, eh?

by the way,Oa has been functioning well and has been very useful route planning on my topographic Kaps

About performance with enhanced cm93 detail...

Well, that's life. At the leading edge of SW development, we always want more power.

These little devices do not have the raw horsepower of a modern x86 machine. They don't have the RAM capacity, they run many many background tasks/threads which cannot be eliminated, and their bulk storage (sdcard) is not particularly fast. OCPN has to share these limited resources with everything else that is running on the device.

Rendering vector charts is compute-intensive. If you study the compiler generated code, you will see that a RISC processor like ARMV7 needs to execute a lot of cycles to do what an x86 might do in one clock. So raw clock speed and RAM availability are critical to performance. And these are precious commodities on Android devices.

Even though it is pretty to look at, showing high detail on a very fine pitch display does not enhance the practical user experience, IMHO. This is why the default cm93 detail level is set very low on OA in Basic mode.

If other Android georef applications run faster/smoother than OCPN, consider the accuracy of the geo data they are using. Is it really suitable for navigation?

IMHO

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Dave,
correct what you write and well known since a long time.
Therefore your goal to have one code base for all known platforms doesn't work.
I suggest to divide the code now to have the best result for each platform. The Android example has shown the limitations now.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718

Now the program starts to work properly, but it has still some graphic problem:
I have a tablet LG G pad 8.3 (1920x1200) and the CM 93 at some level of zoom have some areas colored in different color and the word meters is visualized only for one half.
Is it possible in the future have the dashboard more complete (better if configurable)? This could be usefull also in the version for PC.
Tank you

alessandrone...
What exactly do you mean by the dashboard request - there is none in OA so far and the desktop one is configurable...
We are happy to implement new features you guys want, but kind of need to know what they are

Today's pull tested in Win-XP and W7. New AIS alert issue:
The AIS-Alert message is present when required but the window is intermittent moving down on and eventually out of the screen. Every move is about 1 cm each second. It's impossible to "catch" a button. (OpenGl independent)
