Weather routing or plug-ins for commercial charts are not available for Android.
That's why I suggested to have a look at the OpenPlotter/Raspberry project. It is more flexible and should be well suited for your type of applications.
OpenPlotter is a Linux running on Raspberry. You will need to add some display, a case etc. And it will integrate easily(?) with any sensor you might use.
You can get an AIS receiver for very little money as well based on a software defined USB stick.
Obviously Android is an alternative if you are conscious about it's limitations (and satified with those).

Thank you BCN.
Things are getting more and more clear to me.
I now understand OpenPlotter : Unix based solution, meaning full OpenCPN functionalities including all plug-ins ++
I understand on Android, plug-ins have to come "hard-wired" with OpenCPN. I gess most of the key ones will come in the future.
In both cases the main problem remains for European (especially French) Maps. How to get accurate (Vector is better) charts for an acceptable cost?
Best Regards

Hello,
I do not understand why a 6,50 can't host a PC (at least a NetBook) where you'll plug an usb GPS "mouse" and an usb key with an auto running Linux environment built for sailors and with all the necessary whom OpenCPN ---> Google : "Navigatrix" (very much more stable and simple than under Windows, all is pre-configured - except other langages than english and maybe wifi-card)
About that version of OpenCPN on Android (oCPN-A or OA):
- I think you can get AIS (transmitted/shared by WIFI) from your AIS device.
(perhaps not so easy to configure on oCPN-A, right "port" and so on) I have tried a TV-USB-key without success, trouble with driver and overall with communication with OA;
- the charts ... raster ones (+/- free) : the plugin knows where to search/find them, no?
From my point of view the rasters are very heavy for these little tablets
I know no vector chart for an "acceptable" cost (in regard of the hardware), the alone I know for similar hardwares are those from Navionics with their free appli running on phones or tablets (Android, Apple) "Boating"
- there is a free version and another one ($10) to download/install on google market, the 2nd with more plugins
- help files : most of the "usual" helps of OpenCPN are available on android version (AIS, Charts, problems with "ports", etc.). The main diferences are the way to use the tablet (no right-click), particulary with routes (info-bull, WP to ceate/move, ...)
As everybody knows, OpenCPN as Boating are not to use at sea !

Am I wrong or not for Grib and Rooting? They need plugins ? Still to be adapted to Andoïd?
Have a nice day or night, based on where you are!!

OpenCPN AIS on Android is not a plugin it just comes in the main package.
I do not use grib nor rooting from OpenCpn on android. I use a full netbook (an ssd 11 incher, Windows) with MaxSea, zyGrib, qtVlm, etc. I do a lot of wx routing work and find a small touch screen no use for this.
I think there is qtVlm for Android too. Google it out. It seems pretty well cut for the racing use.
BTW What Mini do you sail? I am very much into Mini working with some skippers before the Mini Transats and other races.
Cheers,
b.

Mini-Transat
BCN has been very helpful and answered a number of your good questions. Perhaps you can continue this discussion on the proper "Android OpenCPN" forum, so that others will also benefit and the answers do not have to be repeated?
Go to the website: OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage
See the "Forums" TAB then select the bottom link "OpenCPN Android"
Or link to it directly here: OpenCPN Android Forum for the Purchased App
Please post any other questions on the proper forum.
Thank you.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.718
I had ZERO trouble configuring Android OpenCPN for wifi data. Just type in the IP and other relevant info and both AIS and GPS data get in no hiccups.
Waterproofing a laptop on a Mini is a challenge. A waterproof tablet can be the better way.
Another factor is netbook cannot be had in the pocket, a tablet (small) can. So again, given a Mini reality, a waterproof tablet can have the upper hand.
Energy is another factor.
Etc.
