The Android port for wxWidgets was part of Googles Summer of Code 2014 (GSoC):

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.530

bcn, etc...

wxWidgets for Android is a critical part of OCPN-Android. It is poorly supported, probably only 3 guys working on it (me, Sean, and Mario). It has many bugs and deficiencies, and not much interest outside of OCPN.
But it has been made to work after a fashion, well enought for OA.

We hope someday to see Qt for IOS, which will then give us wxIOS, which then gives us OIOS. Or maybe wxIOS native. We'll see....

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.530

OpenCPN could be better and more stable when the idea to have cross-platform code is abandonded. The more operating systems will be supported the more limits are seen and the code becomes unreadable for non-professionals. The attempt for Android shows this already drastically.

hey, hey! carcode-"Attempt?" Successful "attempt"! ... oxygen masks are still required, but the flag has been planted on Mt.Android.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.530

Wrong...

Regarding you earlier post:
Code:
Position type built-in GPS still not working.

Stopped testing there...
Stream of thought follows....

We need to decide how to handle the case of tablets (such as yours) that do not report GPS location as NMEA strings. We can get the location by alternative means, and synthesize an NMEA sentence, probably $GPGLL. This is no problem, in general.

However, it is not clear to me that the speed and course will be available in this way. I do not have a tablet with this property to test. Without COG and SOG, OCPN will not be able to render the ownship icon and friends correctly.

So, I suppose we will try this method in the next Beta, and see what happens...

On your device, do other nav apps show speed and course information without using some type of NMEA converter app as you have used before?

Comments?

Thanks
Dave

To be clear, wxWidgets has an android port which is incomplete and could not be used at this point, instead I decided to try wxQT which was much closer and was able to make opencpn work with it on linux. This port supports all the platforms of QT (including iOS). So far only tested on linux and android, but there may be interest in this port at any time to help it's development. Basically everything works with a lot of bugs. On the wxWidgets list, some people are interested in using it for osx for example because the wx port there is also buggy. Eventually it might be interesting to use on linux or even windows for a different look and feel, and possibly would offer superior performance if the qt widgets perform rendering with better acceleration.

As I have said before opencpn should already work on iOS but it probably isn't usable (just as android wasn't when I first mentioned it and Dave took care of that)

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.530

What are the benefits of using wxQt instead of the native Qt5?
For sure more problems, that's all.
And of course nobody seems to know that such things are prohibited by Apples iOS App Store terms and conditions for the GPL versions of Qt.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.530

Gerhard....

I think you have found the essential point.

OCPN will not ever be distributable on the Apple Store, due to our extensive use of GPLv2. The key point seems to be that we, like most other GPL projects, do not own exclusive copyright to the entire OCPN content.
That is the nature of GPL.
The presence or absence of Qt is not relevant, nor would a native wxIOS port "fix" the problem.

The App Store T.O.S. is simply incompatible with GPLv2. So Apple, by distributing OCPN, would be in violation of its own TOS. Study the case of the takedown of VLC for iPhone for more info.

sigh...

Re: Fading chart outlines:

I simply cannot understand what is going on in this shot:

http://jplg22.ouvaton.org/Data/Scree...2-14-42-56.png

If you look closely you will notice the "red" chart outlines are fading out from top to bottom of the display. We find that some other features are also faded to invisibility by the same effect.

This is a simple cm93 chart presentation, with raster charts (probably SHOM) available but not shown.

I cannot reproduce this effect on any of my test devices. It must be some strange OpenGL artifact, but I have no clue yet.

Are other cm93 users seeing this effect at all? Is it widespread, except for me?

Thanks
Dave

Dave...
Yes, I can see the same problem on the Galaxy Note Pro running Android 4.4.2 as delivered by Samsung.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.530

Hi. Is there a way to set keep alive to on when running O for Android. Have a Norwegian user that asks for this. Same happens on both my Samsung devices.
It's a bit annoying that the screen goes black when navigating
Is this normal at this beta stage?

Samsung Galaxy TAB 8.9, Android 4.3

My devices: Samsung Galaxy S5, Android 5.0 and Samsung TAB 7, Android 4.3

Not quite correct, on TAB you have a max limit of 30 minutes, on my Galaxy S5 I only have max 10 minutes. So this should be a setting in the app.
Other nav apps has this keep alive feature.
