Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Piet,

Thanks, that was one full screen app I hadn't tried. I also assumed they had to be running before O was started. I'll try it when I get back to the boat on Tuesday. (I'm on vacation in the US at the moment)

Dave, I'll also look for any other apps that might be changing the screen since it seems that no one else has this issue.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

First time Android OpenCPN user.

Loaded fine and imported charts. No problems other than previously noted.

Android SM-T805 version 4.4.2 on Galaxy S Tab.

Thank you!

So, a complex, complete opencpn version for Android is not so necessary. ¿Or maybe yes?
Hello everybody, have been lurking here for a while and thought it was a good time to join...
IMHO, features and functionality is what sets opencpn apart from other chart plotter apps so, I believe the current approach is in the right direction and true to the project's spirit.

To our topic now:

Sony Xperia Z3 D6653 on 5.0.2 lollipop rooted & bootloader unlocked:

Able to load cm93 charts & S57 enc's
Internal GPS works, no position refresh issues.
Zooming & panning a bit slow and with a few crashes.
Status bar partially clipped but still legible with some effort.
Occasionally getting Wxwidgets error msg.
Haven't tried AIS as I'm on leave and have no access to equipment atm.

Last but not least, my congratulations to the developers, testers and the entire community for the ongoing effort.
Would be glad to be of service and contribute in any way that I can

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Hi Love it, works just fine on my Samsung S tablet. My only problem is no depth reading on the cm93 charts. Kap files great.
Have been playing with Raspberry Pi 2 but this makes it much faster.

Changelog:

8. Incorporate github master branch changes, including:
...Quilting of skewed raster charts.
...timed or manual toolbar hiding method.
9. Correct screen geometry calculations when android ActionBar is shown.
10. Improve ChartBar rendering geometry.
11. Improve StatusBar rendering geometry.

The big change here is automatic quilting of all raster charts, including skewed charts commonly seen in NOAA issues covering US east coast waters. You will also note some improved screen composition for the various android versions, with or without the android action bar enabled.

As a result of this Alpha test series, I am convinced that OA is generally compatible with a wide variety of android devices. Accordingly, this will be the last Alpha test of OA. We shall shortly move on to an "official" Beta series for OA, including Bug tracking and all that.

Thanks so much for all your patient help. Keep the feedback coming.

Good Luck
Dave

? what kind of charts are you using, as my cm93 charts won't show depth on the charts?

Neddy. O on android is almost exactly the same as O on computer
goto
OpenCPN User Manual | Official OpenCPN Homepage
more particularly; vector charts here:
Vector Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage

configure,configure,configure!

just to add-this is a test version on Android: ie: on a small smartphone Android, I have needed to get into editing the ".conf" file and on newer versions of android, this may require:
copying the conf from the device to a computer
copying the contents to yet another file to edit,
editing the copy,
deleting
the one on the phone,
and finally,
replacing it with your edited version being sure to have the same name as the original .... "opencpn.conf"

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Update: installed on OnePlus One running CM12, not rooted. Same error when disabling buttons as on the Nexus. Expanded Desktop is built in in this Android flavour, but OpenCPN still keeps the bottom line free (which is extra useless since this phone does have hardware buttons). Top part with hidden statusbar does properly move up. Funny thing; if I disable Expanded Desktop, it does normally scale to the bottom.

Clockwork Mod ROMS include root. Your device is rooted. Download an app from Google Play that tests for root. You'll know then, for sure.

Enjoy the benefits of your rooted device by downloading FX File Manager and the FX root extension from GP. Lots of other apps requiring a rooted device too.

Wow! Outstanding.

50% of the reason I bought a tablet was to run ocpn. I tried and failed several times with the chroot /Linux method. Finally I bought mx mariner. If only I had waited 2 weeks.

Fantastic. It worked straight out of the box!!

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Connectivity:

- I have tried AIS and GPS over wifi, works fine,
- internal GPS, works fine,
- tcp/udp OUTPUT, works fine.

Has anyone tested data input/output via serial (ftdi/USB OTG) ???

Cheers,
b.

Exactly. But no OTG on ours and so I can't give it a try.

As far as connectivity goes, this seems that last hurdle.

Ftdi'ed anyone perhaps?

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

BTW Beware BT-353 can fail to deliver usable data as it seems to lock up on some Linux commands. I have seen this when testing USB to wifi bridges. The unit goes into rubbish mode and it takes about two days for it to recover. Some say you can send a line command to it and re-set to nmea BUT I tried and ours responded with even more slurred data.

Should the above be your fate you will know as the moment you connect the BU-353 back onto any other terminal you can see it is no longer sending out clean nmea sentences.

Test your Android OpenCPN with anything that sends serial via ftdi converter, if you can. This could help find out if this is a BU/Prolific problem or an AOCPN challenge that could be addressed by the developer.

Regards,
b.
