Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Dave,
One of the VNCs that I use with O under linuxdeploy uses a long touch combined with a tap anywhere else to get a right-click. It is not intuitive, but it is easily learn-able and gets you another set of commands fairly easily. It could be used to "pin" down the waypoint to differentiate it from a pan. I'm not sure it is the best solution in this case, but put it in the hopper of ideas.

Best, Eric

I would like to know if this is android version specific, or device specific, or maybe I just do not understand the use case.

Please test, if able, and describe in good detail the actions used to demonstrate the problem. Simpler cases are better.

Thanks

Dave

It's not easy : I find O very unstable in this particular case : With exactly the same scenario I get different behavior.

My process is always the same and quite simple:
- I use auto hide tool bow for 5s
- I tap on the drag zone to show tool bar and start creating a route
- I tap to create wps
- a long touch to open menu to end route creation
- a long touch to open menu to delete it

- creating route
Example 1-
On shot 1-1 the first point has been created , the second is half created ( I mean the route line is drawn but not the way point itself) and then the next taps ( which you can't see off course ) have done nothing.
On shot 1-2 I have introduce a small drag and all the wps from the previous taps are here.
Example 2-
On shot 2-1 this time the first taps have done nothings. Shot 2-2 shows the result after introducing a small drag

I precise that in each example, there is only a small drag between the two shots!

-deleting route
example 1-
On shot 3-1 the confirmation pop up is shown and the route is still blue
I click OK and on shot 3-2 the route is still here. It will disappear only when dragging
example 2-
On the contrary, on shot 4-1 the route has turn red when "delete" was selected in the menu. In this case the route disappears immediately when OK is clicked.

A remark : Clicking on any button of the confirmation menu has the same result : deleting the route

Eric,

You beat me to it. It would really be great if mouse options were selectible. This a huge benefit of using a vnc which offers single hand, simulated touchpad, direct hold pan and direct swipe pan modes.

For the route and pan dilemma:

For drawing (routes) another option would be a toggle between drawing and pan/zoom. Only visible for operations like this.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

I think swipe begins with touch and hold while drop a mark (drop a WPT) is a single tap.

Tap and hold over a mark accesses the right click WPT or mark menu.

Created WPTs and routes did not find the discussed problem. Odd.

Route gestures should be OFF unless Route icon got tapped. I think. Not sure this can be arranged under present icons (probably an on/off icon would be required).

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

I have used MxMariner and Navionic Android navigation apps for the last couple of years. MxMariner uses a cross hair cursor located in the center of the screen and you pan the chart so that the location that you want the mark to be is located under the cross hair, then press the route icon to place the mark. Navionic uses a long press gesture to place the mark. The chart can be zoomed, panned and scrolled while in the route creation modes. I can post screens shots if it would help with my explanation

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

another routing glitch:
When I tap to place a wpt very near the left or right side of the screen, the screen pans all by itelf as a routeline is drawn "infinitely".
To stop this behaviour, I tap the central area of the screen...whereby a cluster of wpts and routelines appear....
(android 4.0.3)

Added: today, to get a screengrab of the above but, with chart bar and status bar disabled (if that is the "fix") ,the top and bottom also scroll when wpt placed on the edge (where it would not scroll the screen yesterday! I swear! and I did try disabling the chart+status bars too without today's success-aargh.) and a tap in central screen stops routeline, without random wpt cluster, thereby:
"solving" the routeline creation question if a body can get used to it. Particularly important in (my) training is to remember to hold the tap at the last wpt to make "end route" available.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

ah, got one-a screengrab of extra wpts created...

managed to create a route through this pass (very top of picture) on cm93 but it all "went south" as I went south ...I didn't intentionally draw most of these except the first exit from pass and the ending cluster.

did better on raster chart. suspect my machine is too weak, given? that raster/kaps consume less "power"?...(Red as route used for clarity-not a machine error)

Notes: Chart group was restricted to the raster before attempting this second route but still,On the way I noted the ol' "Cache-does-not-seem-to-flush-or-something " issue per overzoomed charts because the cm93 kept showing; on every touch, then black, then redraw the proper raster; and the charts were not overzoomed. But I settled it down before attempting this route.
I suppose I'm not helping-my machine specs are borderline 512 ram and 1.x ghz processor.
so this "blog" is as much about ancient hardware ...

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Hi all, been lurking on the 'ocpn runs on embedded arm' forum for ages, never could get Linux deploy to run and had a boat to rebuild too. Now we're here and its all so much simpler for the less techy of us.

Thanks so much for all the work you guys have been doing.

I have a nexus 10 running rooted 5.0.1, the route making problem is not showing up here other than the lack of ability to pan without dropping waypoints. Another way to deal with this I've come across and found quite intuitive is to use a two finger touch to control panning, it gels well with the pinch zoom, very fluid. Also leaves single tap and long touch gestures free.

I have another issue, mouse control, I've plugged a mouse in to my tablet and am able to move the tool bar around but that's all I can do with it. I plan on using the tablet as a cockpit/couch device but was hoping to set up a small arm device and a 16inch screen at the nav table, since we now have Oa and a lot of these devices are available running android I'd like to stick to one operating system. Will full mouse support and wired instrument connectivity be worked into the android port?

Thanks again

Rich

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Hi Dave and all

I tried to export and import routes :
I encountered many problems (difficult path selections, file selection dialog not centered in portrait format etc... some crashes) but the most important :
It was a disaster for me as many of my directories were displaced and mixed. It seems that playing with the path selection has done that

Am I the only with that problem ?

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Ptizef, for what it's worth on my old Android, I'm able to export/import gpx ok in route manager. I have to use a "touch pen" device and was confused as to what OS I am using ..tapping a folder does not expand it etc..but have found all the little buttons now.
O's browsing dialogues are the most powerful I have on this machine and it's a little scary at such a tiny scale.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427

Import and export routes
I can confirm that it's possible (and easy ) to displace files and folders in the file selection dialogs when importing or exporting routes.
I am sorry ,it's not new but as that caused any problem with a mouse or with a large touch screen,I never noticed that fact.
With a very small device, it's almost impossible to ovoid this pitfall.
File selection for import is unusable in portrait format (see shot s1 )
File selection for export doesn't allow to select path in portrait format(see shot s2)
It is better and usable in landscape format but the dialog could be a bit larger and the small icons are too small(shots s3-s4)

When a route is activated, it is impossible to toggle leg/route
The menu "This leg, full route, show highway" doesn't show.
