OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
Hello testers.
The 4.1.427 Alpha test release of OpenCPN for Android is available for download now.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vrnye0t3sf...1.427.apk?dl=0
Changelog:
8. Incorporate github master branch changes, including:
...Quilting of skewed raster charts.
...timed or manual toolbar hiding method.
9. Correct screen geometry calculations when android ActionBar is shown.
10. Improve ChartBar rendering geometry.
11. Improve StatusBar rendering geometry.
The big change here is automatic quilting of all raster charts, including skewed charts commonly seen in NOAA issues covering US east coast waters. You will also note some improved screen composition for the various android versions, with or without the android action bar enabled.
As a result of this Alpha test series, I am convinced that OA is generally compatible with a wide variety of android devices. Accordingly, this will be the last Alpha test of OA. We shall shortly move on to an "official" Beta series for OA, including Bug tracking and all that.
Thanks so much for all your patient help. Keep the feedback coming.
Good Luck
Dave

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
I agree that the size of the original chart bar on my 10" tablet was best.
Wierd issues with CM93 chart display. Displayed in reverse, East to West! Flipped. Loading and zooming very slow now, with the progress indicater appearing to be stuck in a loop... Tapping on go to boat icon took me to a location probably 70 miles north of my actual position... GPS is functioning properly according to GPS Test.
Managing position of menu bar is flaky and no menus pop up to control what displays either.
GPS Share WIFI still necessary for GPS to function on tablets producing location rather than nmea data.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
No complaints about speed zooming or panning here. It's according to the device in my case.
InlandENCs work
Raster charts, quilting of skewed charts looks ok.
Bit difficult to get the tool bar to unfold/show-up, but this will depend on the touch screen/pointing device I suppose.
What I'm missing is the distance/bearing to cursor due to no-hovering.
What about a tool "show distance/bearing to point"? With option: maintain this point....

Strange behavior of "Enable Toolbar auto-hide" for other systems than Android. Please check this.

Huge improvement! And the O icon is now persistent on a screen too.
(...Not the place maybe but if anybody from Lenovo is here, I want to express my ,aah, "appreciation" for the theming that offers me messages like these:Trust me; they are absolutely unreadable on a shiny tablet such that I've taken to downloading them to a laptop to read em.

On my linux box(gentoo) the behavior is the same as Android 4.3. The chartbar is on a 10" screen indeed a bit overdone.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
I am ok with sizes even on this 7" tablet. My fingers are by no means fat either .
Quilting works fine so far.
...tweaking O madly there are still some oddities showing up Menu bar versus Chart and/or infobar but I started with everything showing and I could have left it that-a-way and been happy...
PS: a restart made all whole again.
ps ps. It might be that using the Menu/View/Show Chart Bar acts not so well as the longer path:
Menu/Tools/Options/Show Chart Bar? ...but I am biased too-I am not a fan of duplications. I would rather go the longer way for "settings" (which "View" is) and the shorter way to "chartwork" itself...

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
Great progress Dave, graphics are much improved, as is the speed of the graphics. I can also now see the status bar abd chart bar, but O seems to be over-respecting the android menu area now. It not only leaves room for the menu, but also another equal area above that that stays black. It also no longer allows using one of the full screen apps that Barnakiel found to get that area back to usable in O. I do think you should follow the android conventions, and leave the menu bar there, but it would be good to be able to over-ride that with the full-screen apps if a user wanted to. I'll try to add screenshots, one regular and one using fullscreen
BT still doesn't work but based on your comments, I don't think you had time to work on that.
moto Xoom android 4.1.2
Thanks for your work, Eric

Hello Dave,
First attempt:
Installation: Ok.
But the icon bar is completely unusable with my fingers. It really lacks in height and length.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
A glitch with tides per Maximum-Minimum window (upper right). They will disappear altogether from here too , when "Next" or "Previous" is invoked. Also when tide is closed and reopened or another tide station is opened.
This is new behaviour I think, but needs confirming in case it's just my Harmonics...

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
also, a not-very important (merely ugly) issue panning an overzoomed kap:
when zoomed to 25x or so, screen goes black whenever my finger is dragging/panning the kap. This happens when no other kap charts are available at smaller scales. The worldmap shipped with O may show partially instead of the black or may not. It might even be a blue colour.
ONly happens after futzing with the above, but when switched to cm93 using Chart Bar, screen may revert to the small scale kap when zooming.
Related to this "caching confusion" I keep cm93 in its own chart group because I saw this crossover behaviour in the last alpha, where it seemed a bit random whether a raster chart or the cm93 would show when zooming
PS: and is still the case. Selecting cm93 from chart bar will exhibit the above ...something to do with caching

Re: OpenCPN for Android Alpha test 4.1.427
Happy,
the black screen issue has been there already in the first version:

And as you are saying: under extreme overzoom

But for me O recovers. It is only during the actual push n drag...when released, my "canvas" fills back in correctly.
I suppose My complaint/concern would be the mixup between cm93 and raster charts which I never experience on a laptop.
I digress, but as a slacker- user -lazy -birdbrain, I know it is a consequence of HAVING a chart bar available for me to push. If I HAD to choose cm93 as a "group" the issue would never arise . Good thing I'm not a software engineer!
