Can you also see stats for downloaders' computer systems?

That might be interesting too

Thats bizzare!

Visitors to my website are:

Perc.Operating System
43.60% WinXP
25.20% WinVista
17.20% MacOSX
10.20% Win7
3.60% unknown
0.20% SymbianOS

There must be a huge fracture in the sailing community between those that visit websites like mine and those that download programs.
You are saying theres 10 times more Linux users than Mac users?

I notice Wikipaedia's figuers basically agree with my website visitors:

Usage share of web client operating systems. Source: Median values from Usage share of operating systems. Windows XP (52.94%) Windows Vista (22.60%) Windows 7 (12.91%) Mac OS X (6.15%) Linux (1.15%) iPhone (0.81%) Other (2.73%)

There must be something I am missing.

I can think of at least two factors that may contribute to the OS breakdown:

1) Anecdotally, I have seen a *lot* of cruising boats with Linux laptops come through here. My sense is that, being the frugal lot we are, many sailors like Linux and will use it if possible.

2) OpenCPN is by far the most useful Linux nav program in existence. It's possible that many Mac users may be happy with MacEnc or similar, while for Linux users it's practically OpenCPN or nothing, so anyone using Linux is downloading OpenCPN.

Seaclear is reported to run with Wine. I have tested it myself and have friends using it succesfully. Then only with raster charts of course...

Theres others, too.. Seafarer is native, but also closed source. Polarnavy is closed source linux compatible.

Free software there's also capcode, the chap doing it is a really nice guy, he's integrated a nasa world wind 3D views and wind polars etc. It's written in Java.

beta and release

It's interesting... if you change the date parameters, there are more Windows downloads during beta cycles. Linux users are probably pulling from CVS during these time periods. Then, Linux downloads catch up to Windows downloads after release.

Other thoughts... sailors are pretty independent, free thinking people. I think this is reflective of the open source community. Linux and open source comes naturally.

So far, so good.

But now it's becoming a little bit absurd.

In my opinion it is quite logical that
Quote:

because the process of downloading and compiling from CVS for Linux is
  • well documented
  • up-to-date
  • easier (as for Windows)
And IMHO Linux users are more familiar with things like this whereas the classical Windows user is more used to just work with programs, not compiling them before use.

That does not have anything to do with a reflection of the open source community.

I am used to Windows as OS for more than 20 years. And I don't see why I (personally) should switch to Linux. That does not affect my attitude towards Open-Source software/ programs at all.

And as the statistics for the German Website (for the last 3 months) shows (see Besucherstatistik nach 3 Monaten | OpenCPN.de), 4 out of 5 visitors are running on a Windows platform.

So I am still hoping that the Windows support from the developers side becomes even better. The buildwin directory and the vcproj (please keep the file up-to-date - otherwise it is useless) file were a good beginning.

I am also quite sure that the number of OCPN users who are running on Windows platform is much larger than the Linux one. This forum may lead to another impression but only because the Linux guys are more active here (and in the developement).

And today it is still a fact that if you code a program which is not running on Windows, you code for a minority - open source or not.

So one of the things the project is missing is a well-defined task sharing. IMO there should be at least one named person for each supported OS whose job is it to make sure that every part of the project concerning the respective OS is up-to-date at any time.

I cannot hear the discussion about Linux and Windows anymore and as written on SF.net

I would certainly do this if I could ..., but I am
  • not a programmer (no knowledge of C++)
  • not involved in the developement of OCPN
  • English is not my mother tongue (and my skills are not enough to express technical details with the needed precision)
  • and many more ...
So it should be someone who is already involved in the developement.
One possible solution/ suggestion:
Dave -> Linux
Mark -> Windows
??? -> Mac OS

As you can see on the German website I try to do my best in supporting the OCPN users (especially the ones that uses Windows ).

Idpnd, funny :-)

Gunther, of course you're right, but as idpnd alludes, we haven't found folks that are capable, willing, and have the time. I would love to, but I just can't right now...even though this project is at the top of my list in importance. I hope to help more...a lot more, when I can.

I haven't even had time to read forum msgs in a month...
