OpenCPN Beta Version 4.8.10109

SailorF54, Giletarom...
Do you see the decompression problem, in whose description I now got a bit lost, only with RAR compressed charts from Peru or also some others?

Pavel

Hi Pavel

I've just tested
- Romania Inland (ENC): OK
- USA Florida (RNC) : OK
- GHSSG (deleted previous folder first) OK
- Argentina (RNC): OK
So far only Peru charts seem concerned

In this post, that Pavel send :
OCPN Beta 4.8.1 PreAlpha

I see this text:
"
Keep on mind that this is really not meant to replace the SOG/COG info from a correctly working GPS, but to produce "at least something" in case the data is completely missing or wrong.
"

Forgive me for my poor "English language", and I am not sure I understood what Pavel means.
It seems to me that he says that if the results are not what is expected, it is not that important.

If that's really what Pavel meant, then I do not agree.

Firstly :
- VDR recordings are part of the memory of my life and like the photos that we keep, I take a certain pleasure, to make them "replay" by VDR, even several years after their recording. So, I need that, what I see on the screen, really corresponds to what I lived.

Secondly:
- VDR recordings are also part of my "Logbook". Admittedly, they are not transcribed in words and sentences, but if necessary, they could be used as proof in a file study. In 2016, one day, I forgot, in the morning, before leaving to launch VDR. Tonight, I met a ferry in a very narrow channel. To avoid this ferry, I threw my boat on the right side and ran aground. Little damage but it was necessary to make a repair. If I had the VDR file, I could have shown my insurance company in what condition, this event was produced. This could have facilitated negotiations with the insurer.

Finally :
- I use VDR when I make presentations about OpenCPN in front of the public, for example at the Paris Boat Show. It is obvious that the demonstrations in question are very pleasant to watch by this public.

In other words, it is important that VDR is a practical product and pleasant to live .... A boat that moves from left to right while looking at the top of the screen, as sometimes happens now, this is not serious and it is indefensible.

I take the opportunity to ask that VDR can automatically start recording mode, each time you start OpenCPN (Obviously, a check box could be used to validate this in the options, and the user could check this box during periods navigation and uncheck it during test periods)

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 4.8.10109

Gilletarom...
This feature is interesting only for people who do not have the SOG and COG data available at all (Certainly NOT your case and not the case of 99.9% of the users).
It actually was the first time ever I have seen a system where the GPS provided only the GGA sentence and nothing else two 3 weeks ago, when I implemented this feature.

Do NOT turn it on if your system has SOG/COG available from the GPS.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 4.8.10109

The SOG calculation from position reports is ONLY for the case when the data stream does not contain COG or SOG - messages that contain speed or heading.

If you are taking a normal VDR record when you were navigating, then this will have the normal NMEA sentences from your GPS and AIS.

If you replay a standard NMEA file with speed and heading then you will mix this with position calculation and might get I don't know what.

One would need to strip off all records that contain velocity and heading maintaining only records with GGA for example.
This is really a borderline case. Not for daily use.

Gilletarom...

I agree with Pavel.

Think of this button as emergency "GET-HOME" option for OCPN. If it is needed, then there is probably something wrong with your GPS configuration, which can be mended when next in port.

It is not needed or desired for normal operation.

It will produce anomalies for course-up auto-follow mode.
It will produce anomalies in the predictor lines and AIS calculations while maneuvering sharply, or at very low speed.

Gilletarom...

Regarding:
OpenCPN Beta Version 4.8.10109

GRIB current arrow artifacts.

I cannot reproduce. I think this is Windows, non-OpenGL mode?
I am using the same GRIB file.
Is the bad drawing steady, or does it correct if you advance the timeline to re-draw?

Thanks
Dave

Any other information?

Hakan...

Please check the same GRIB file, showing current arrows only. In settings, adjust "Current" page to show "single arrows".

Thanks

Dave

Any other information?
1° I use my Lenovo, Windows 10, OpenGL ON.

2° Il think that we cannot name this a "GRIB current arrow artifacts". There is no artefacts.

3° I noticed the same phenomenon with several Grib files. This phenomenon is visible in a truly local place. Just on one point at a time. The other points are generally correct for the same time slot of the GRIB. If you change time slot, it may be at another point that the arrows are not consistent.

There are two possible explanations:
- Or a bug in OpenCPN, bug that no one could see before, lack of means of comparison. But I do not believe it. That said, why not.
- The data are different because the two models of "forecasts" that made it possible to manufacture them are different. And if the data is different, it makes sense that the arrows displayed by OpenCPN are different.

The current data available in the SkyRon files are certainly derived from the observations of the seas by some European satellites, observations that are processed in Europe thanks to prediction models similar to the meteorological models. The information is gathered in Toulouse, France, by an organization set up by the European community called "Coppernicus". Data are available free of charge.

There are files that only contain the current data on the Weater4D software website, here: Index of /MyOcean
The difference between Skyron files is that they have a time stamp of 1 hour to full hour (1h, 2h, 3h ...) while those of SkyRon, with the same timestamp, half an hour in half an hour (1:30h, 2:30h, 3:30h ...).
You can compare if you download the file "Manche" from Weather4D and the file "Cherbourg ..." from Skyron.

I have noticed some points where the arrows can be, some time, very different. Please use the gpx file here joined to load these points.

I understood. Thank you for your explanations.

BUT :
For alpha users to understand and not use this in any way, they must be helped. You must add a tooltip, with a text that appears in the "Options / Ship / Own ship" page, when you put the mouse over the check box or the box with time change.

Gilletarom.

It's not a new issue if you used proportional arrows for currents, they are ugly for speed > 4, proportional is done by increasing line width and it doesn't work well then. It' worst with opengl .

Please, you have to :
- Zoom more, just under the island of Wight.
- Activate currents in the OCPN iconsbar
- using the gpx file that I send in my previous post.

Then you can see that I speak.
