Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Perhaps it is time to have Gradar listed under plugins?
Is there anyone willing and knowledgeable enough to create a Gradar Radar Plugin writeup for the plugins page? https://opencpn.org/ocpn/plugins

I think it's there already:
Garmin Radar Plugin | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Cheers,

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Hello...

To the sailor in Russia at about 55N/107E using Russian S57 charts and submitting a 3.3.2424 crash report.

Thank you. I have analysed the report and implemented a solution for the OCPN Version 4 Release.

This one was a special corner case:
Arriving at the end of a temporary route with the Route Properties dialog for that route open and visible.

Anyone can duplicate this if they want by using a VDR recording.
1. Put a mark somewhere that you know the VDR ownship will pass over.
2. Start the VDR playback.
3. Open Route manager dialog, select the mark you just created, and select "Goto". A temporary route is created and activated.
4. Right click on the now active temporary route, and show its properties.
5. Wait patiently for arrival.
6. Observe crash on arrival.
7. Don't send it to me, unless it is a really different scenario than this.

Thanks again
Dave

Sorry Dave, my American culture is too poor. Also I'm not sure I understand your expressions "For 10 cents" and "That my two cents."

If I understand you do not want to leave in place the two new keyboard shortcuts "[" and "]". This is because:
- You miss back of experience at sea.
- It requires too much work to approach the release of version 4.0.

Personally, I did not ask these keyboard shortcuts. By cons, as soon as they were present I watched to make all possible attempts to understand and check their operation.
Personally, if you leave aside momentarily to re-introduce in a future beta, it does not bother me.

Yours faithfully. Gilletarom

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Hello Dave,

Sorry for bothering you again with keyboard shortcuts. Can still be a French keyboard problem.

When I look on the wiki version I noticed that there are keyboard shortcuts that works with "alt". But none should work with "alt gr" unless "[", "]" and "\" (with french kayboard).

And I, for example, finds that:
- "Alt -" causes a zoom - but also "alt GR and |" and this is probably because the French keyboard "-" and "|" are on the same key.
- Similarly for "Alt +" and "Alt GR and }" probably also because "+" and "}" are also on the same key.

Is that intentional on your part or is it an anomaly?

Best regards, Gilletarom.

Gilletarom, Dave...

From my point of view, there is too much shortcuts,

Regarding the French keyboard codification, it reminds me, few decades ago, when each program need to be adapted to the printer.

I will suggest, after the release of the V4 version, to start a real discussion on this item by :
- keeping in mind "keep simple for everyone (users, developpers...)
- taking in account feedbacks given by tablets users
- ...

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Jean Pierre re grib -yes i can add the note. I think others have done more with grib wiki i will look it over again and add some things

RDr re Tablet - Certainly not to late to add links and screenshots! Please register on the wiki if you have not, then log in and go to your page in the wiki. There is edit at the top. To add screenshots best to add ones that are resized to 500 wide and 800 at very max because they get slower. If you have links 160 x 160 thumbs linked to bigger photo do not go over 800 pixels. The photos and screenshots are uploaded to your account there is a File Browser selection, the you can gp back to edit the page and insert the image. Hopr that helps. We probably should make a couple of pages with Edit instructions

Nahhanni re Gradar yes indeed it is there underneath Radar which was unexpected. I incorrectly thought that was going to be the Ais radar plugin. Thanks

Gilletarom...

re: Alt/AltGr shortcuts...

In OCPN, the Alt key modifier generally enables reduced or smaller effect of the main key selected. The main key's position on the keyboard is the important point, not the actual character it generates. When the Alt/AltGr is used for controlling the chart display, the actual character (e.g. "+" or "}" ) that comes from the main key press is discarded.

So, when the chart window has the focus, the Alt and AltGr keys will both have the same modifier effect. This accommodates all typing styles and handed-ness. Clearly the Alt key is more convenient for right-handed operators.

So, bottom line: The duplication of Alt and AltGR function is intentional.

Thanks
Dave

Best regards, Gilletarom.
May I try to give some clarification
1) when you click both "Alt-GR + key x" you apply two actions (if exist)
-the action triggered by "Alt-GR + key x"
-the action triggered by "key x" alone
so when you press both Alt-GR + key "|" which is the same key as "-" you
you get :
- the action from "Alt-Gr + key "|" or "-" = nothing in this case
- the action from key "-" = zoom
The same with "+"
I don't think this could create any problem for the users, assuming there is no conflict between the two actions as it was for ALT-GR + "\" and "_" fixed now

2) The key Alt is a bit different: The key will change the zoom factor
If you press both "Alt + "-" or "+" zoom is slow and "-" or "+" alone zoom is fast (It's certainly somewhere in the user manual)

I precise with Windows, because I made some tests with Linux and I got curious results. To be confirmed...

Let me know if I've missed something or not been clear due to my poor English

Jean Pierre

I stopped software development ten years ago, so...
Why don't use ASCII values for the keys ?
Maybe this system doesn't exist anymore ?

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Four NOAA raster charts are rejected by the horizontal datum check in beta 3.3.2424:

19016_1.KAP BSB/NA=NIIHAU TO FRENCH FRIGATE SHOALS
KNP/GD=ASTRONOMIC DATUMS (GENERAL)

19019_1.KAP BSB/NA=FRENCH FRIGATE SHOALS TO LAYSAN I
KNP/GD=ASTRONOMIC DATUMS (GENERAL)

19022_1.KAP BSB/NA=LAYSAN ISLAND TO KURE ATOLL
KNP/GD=ASTRONOMIC DATUMS (GENERAL)

81071_1.KAP BSB/NA=BAHIA LAOLAO SAIPAN ISLAND
KNP/GD=UNKNOWN

The Horizontal Datum note in the raster image for each of these charts indicates that some of the chart has been corrected to WGS84, but...

NOAA's S57 versions of these charts are displayed in OpenCPN with WGS84 as the Datum in the chart information boxes. Unfortunately, Horizontal Datum notes and Source Diagrams are seldom (or never) included in vector charts.

I don't think the four charts noted above should delay the rollout of 4.0.

The NOAA Chart Reprojector outputs .KAP files with

GD=WGS_84

as its default.

Thanks to all for your hard work,
Paul

I note this. I'll add explanations in opencpn.shoreline.fr website about it.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Hello Anyone,

With a previous version of O, I raised the issue of the quality of the scale displayed at the bottom right of the screen in the status bar.

Remember, I had created a road, horizontal, 1 nautical mile long, and I had calculated the scale of measuring the length of the route display on my screen.

With the old beta, it did not match.

So I repeated the experience with the new beta.
Dave, if I understand you now hold account of the real screen width (in millimeters), to calculate the scale of the display.
Now this is good. For a calculated scale hand 1/9645, O shows a scale of 1/9600. Considering the measurement errors made by measuring the road on my screen with a meter, now the difference is perfectly acceptable.

Dave, thank you for this improvement.
