Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

RhythmDoctor...
I can reproduce the point if I use Touch and Zoom-to-cursor.

Beats me why this changed in 3.3.2424. I'll try 2410 in a bit.

But stepping back...
I don't really know what should be meant by "zoom to cursor" in touch mode. There is no cursor, really. And no wheel-zoom. Only way to zoom is the toolbar, or pinch. Neither of these carry or imply a cursor position to zoom to. I guess you could make a case that pinch zoom implies the centroid of the multi-touch when the gesture actually starts, but this is thin ice, I think.

So, maybe this is a case where we truly need to be modal, one or the other. i.e. disable zoom-to-cursor if in touch mode.

Thoughts?
Other touch users please chime in here

Thanks
Dave

I suppose this relates to Changelog item
440. Prevent loading BSB charts with invalid or unspecified positioning datum.

USED to have Attachment 94369
But nowAttachment 94370

They were all fine before. The chart image itself was appropriately shifted in opencpn to reflect correction to WGS 84 whatever the header said...

Happy
Your OpenCPN log will tell you for sure.
NAD27 is recognized by O, but there are many versions as the conversion from NAD27 to WGS84 is dependent on location.
I guess that the real problem is that the GD is not stated as "NAD27 Canada", which I think it should be. O will recognize that format.
The whole thing also means that O treated these charts as WGS84 and not as the NAD27 Canada until now.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Happy/cagney...

Here is the concise list of data that O recognises.

Note also that she will accept any of these data with spaces removed, so e.g. "WGS84" and "WGS 84" are equivalent.

I see no plain old "NAD27" in there.

Dave

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Well, that's what I've been wondering per how O sees these and trying to elicit an answer in various ways...now, I know for sure finally,(or think I do)that if she has been reading NAD 27 (without the "Canada") all this time and defaulting to WGS 84, that indicates that these charts' pictures were shifted by the CHS but still indicated in the header that the original picture was NAD 27 perhaps to explain why the drawn latitude and longitude lines are incorrect....note Opencpn grid which is the correct one versus the printed one.Click image for larger version

It is also indicated on the Chart as NAD 27 see below picture...and, appropriate corrections for NAD 83 and WGS 84 are noted too.
publish date 1996 was a long time ago for computers.

@Thomas...I know of which you speak but even in the Printed Chart, NAD27 is all I see, with corrections noted.Click image for larger version

and indeed there are many unhappinesses noted in the log. It keeps me busy chasing these out lately...

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

I do see NAD27 "Canada" on some maps by the way.(That's a subtle way of indicating my rapidly developing theory... that "Canada" may appear on maps not charts? ) Also, Somewhere, perhaps on my Garmun XL12 , I have seen NAD27 Canada subdivided by area ... I don't have an example handy, but can try to find it. A surveyor reading this will know for sure, I expect.

JP/Baikal...

re:
Grib particle zoom performance problems.

JP, you have selected the absolute most stressful situation, with particles, no GL, on a low powered machine. There is at some point a minimum limit of CPU power required to render and respond in reasonable human times. and you may be below that limit.

Try reducing the particle density, and zooming in to a smaller area. This should help.

In any case, we will not be digging into the core timer algorithms at this point in the release cycle. Too risky. If a particular machine/configuration is not powerful enough to smoothly render a particular GRIB particle set with O4, then so be it. It becomes a Bug/Feature Request for 4.2.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

RhythmDoctor....

I can make a small localized change to partially correct the creep problem on repeated zoom-to-cursor (ZTC).

Lets please refresh on what ZTC means for OCPN. It means simply that we try to make sure the point you are zooming IN to will be on the screen near the last cursor position when the zoom is complete. We do not try to move the selected point to the center of the screen. We went round and round on this last year, and this is what we came up with then. There are lots of special edge cases encountered on timed zoom/pan with a quilt, and we are not ready to handle them yet.

I agree that ZTC does not work as nicely as one might expect. Seems not a very popular feature, since we hear very little about it. It has been a low priority. Perhaps another behaviour would be nicer.

But not for O4. Needs a Feature Request.

Thanks
Dave

Dave - I agree that zoom to cursor has no purpose on a tablet without a mouse. So why not just leave "Zoom to Cursor" unselected? Here's why, in my case:

I keep OpenCPN on a microSD card and run it in portable mode. On the boat I insert it in my tablet and run it with touch mode. At home, where I do most of my route planning, I want to use my large monitor, so I put the SD card into my desktop machine and run it on that other machine. On this machine I do a LOT of zooming via scroll wheel, and I'm always positioning my mouse to center the zoom point. So I have "Zoom to Cursor" selected all the time.

With the SD card installation always switching back and forth between tablet and laptop, I tend to keep both Touch Mode and Zoom to Cursor selected at the same time. This worked fine under build 2410, but something has broken in build 2424.

Please also see my other post and video above (post #44 on this thread). It appears that there are new issues with Zoom to Cursor in build 2424, independent of Touch Mode setting. Since posting that message, I've confirmed that the centerpoint of zooming is unpredictable with both scroll wheel (as already mentioned in that post) and when using + and - keys on a keyboard. All of this happening is with touch mode disabled.

[EDIT: I wrote this message before seeing your latest response to me, so here's an addendum in response to that. I agree with you on the function of zoom to cursor. I don't expect the cursor location to move to center - if I wanted that, I'd click on the point to move it to center, then zoom. But what I can say is that the behavior of all zooming in 2424 is significantly different from 2410 when ZTC is selected. Something has broken in the latest build. It's not just zooming with the scroll wheel. It's also broken when using + and - keys. I'd suggest looking closely at the values you are passing for cursor location, because something appears to be wrong there.]

RhythmDoctor...

OK, I do see what you mean with respect to 3.3.2410. It was better there in SmoothZoom. Not much different without SmoothZoom.

I will investigate, but I already have some suspicions...

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Hello Dave,

I have several versions installed in parallel. I especially 332410, in which I installed the plugin S63. I also 332424 in which the S63 is not installed.

This concerns the 332424 version:
In the Options / Chart, S63 tab is not visible. This is normal. But the folder are the charts of the S63 version of 332410 is visible. See screenshot.
This is not normal.

This is a problem I have long observed through a Beta to the next. With the two previous beta versions, I noticed that the installation of S63, in a new beta, when it was already installed in the previous beta, generated construction difficulties / updates to the base data.

We should find a solution to this. Best regards. Gilletarom.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Gilletarom,

just install the S63 plug-in (running the set-up again) into 3.3.2424 and you will access the S63 charts in this version as as well.

The charts are there - to use those the S63 plug-in has to be present in the version. Similar to the other plug-ins.

Thank for this information. But I am not shure that this is easy to undestand by alpha user.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2424 Released

Yes, when using parallel installs there are additional things to take into account - just remind Dave's comment about the S63 Navionics cells some post above.

We had to discuss how to deal with an upgrade without reinstalling all the charts we had already installed. And it takes some "manual" operations.

But a parallel install is not the common environment I believe. We have to cope with this, yes of course.

When somebody upgrades from one version to the next it will be always necessary to re-install the plug-ins - in a Windows environment. The Linuxes are more straight forward in this case.
