It is funny, the "[]" rotation key was "discovered" only recently. I think no-one (except Sean) will really use this option. I can't see much value in real life.

And I suspect it was implemented primarily in order to test OpenGL performance.

Dave
I find this useful so you might set the rotation to any value and not have it change again as the boat makes slight changes in heading.

I mentioned a while ago that this is also extremely useful to detect problems in course-up mode which are difficult to find and fix without it.

I am open to disabling these keys by default, or possibly moving to <>/ instead, but allow them as an option as some users may prefer it.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

My concern is that if rotation is operational that the chart state be clearly shown and represented equally and not "hidden" otherwise users may become confused about a wierd

I can see how it might be useful at times but am somewhat agnostic

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

Hello Dave,

About this item : "Suppress scaled vector charts are overzoom"

After test, it seems to me that the text of this item is not suitable. My tests have allowed me to see that some objects continued to grow and not others. For example, a buoy will always have the same size on the screen. But a rocky area still expand the zoom level.

This seems normal to me.

1. Can anyone provide me the list of objects that always remain the same size?
2. The following text of the item appears to me best:
"Suppress the enlargement of some vector objects when the zoom is excessive"
or :
"Suppress the enlargement of some vector objects"

Am I wrong?

Hello Dave,

On the map rotation with the shortcuts "[" or "]"?

I never managed to make it work. Is it really implemented? Or the radio button for "north up" or "COG up" he prevents the operation of the keyboard shortcuts?

.

What we don't have in OpenCPN is a "course up" mode. What we have is "heading up" and this can cause the screen to keep flicking back and forth as the boat yaws in any kind of sea. I can see the rotation keys being used to align the chart to course up to avoid the heading changes due to yaw affecting the display.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

The "] [" rotation short keys are working fine on all my WinXPs. Although I'm close to an restive user of North-up I've used Sean's function a couple of times this summer.
The actual "Up-status" is easy to follow on the small compass/GPS window where it's also easy to restore to my defaults.

@Littlechay :
I do not understand and / or I do not agree with you

We have a mode "Course up" ie a mode "COG up". To have a mode "Heading up" would require, on all ships, compass heading into the NMEA network.

@RGleason, @Dave :
This difference in word comprehension brings me back to my previous post on the meaning of "Course" and the word "Heading".

RGleason responded with dictionary definitions. But this is not the right way to see the problem.
Obviously, dictionaries will propose variants meaning depending on the context.
But beware, it is necessary that translators can translate .... whatever the language.
This requires that the word "Course" is a one-way in all cases. So what if it impoverishes the English language (sorry).

Your right, my explanation is bad.

Heading, and COG, vary as the boat yaws (depending on the systems damping) causing the screen to rotate.

Many systems have a "course up" mode where the chart rotation is set either by the course currently active in a route or set by the COG (or heading if you have it) instantaneously when course up mode is engaged, and then this course (heading) is fixed.

This is gives a much more stable display, and is particularly useful when bashing upwind in short steep seas which constantly throw your bow off.

This comes back to the recent debate on the necessity to have both a COG and Heading markers .

Doesn't the "Filter course and speed data" accomplish this already? Have you tried increasing the filter time? I always thought that the filter time resulted in smoothing of the data reported on status/dashboard, as well as the course-up chart rotation. If that setting does not act as a buffer for chart rotation, perhaps it should.

Sean...

re:
I have noticed that I must enable the new option "Suppress scaled vector charts on overzoom" otherwise the framebuffer object (hardware panning) does not work, and I can't really understand why it shouldn't it isn't even overzooming.

You are getting caught by the test at:

glChartCanvas.cpp:3027

I can't remember exactly what problem I was trying to resolve here, but this was a brute force solution. Probably I meant to come back to this, but got distracted elsewhere.

Try disabling that line, and see what breaks. I'll do the same.

I do not understand this. For me, on cm93, the buoys expand just fine.

OpenGL on or off, no difference.

Shot attached.

Can you compare?

Thanks

Works fine for me in all cases. Maybe it is a French keyboard difference? Any other users with French kb may test?

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2410 Released

Hello Dave,

When we choose to check "Look ahead mode", it is not possible to select the update period.
It would, in the "Options / Display / Advanced" a similar box that already exists for the update period in the case "Course Up".
