AIS ship positions not updated without chart interaction?

To reproduce:
  • Watch a fast moving ship via AIS, zoom in closely
  • Open the AIS target query window for that AIS target and watch the "Report Age" go to zero but the ship doesn't move on the chart!
  • Move chart with mouse, and ship jumps to new position

Anyone can confirm?

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2330 Released

'Hoy testers...

OK, here is design question:

You are loading chart directories (Options->Charts->Chart files)

1. You load one directory, exit options, and all is well.
2. You go to Options and load another directory.
3. Depending on your chart directory layout and what directory you select, the second directory contains, in the tree somewhere, a chart with the exact same name and timestamp as a chart that is already in place from step(1). This can happen, for instance, if you download and install NOAA raster charts by region, one-by-one. Some small scale charts will appear in several Region collections as downloaded from NOAA.

What is the "right" thing to do?

In OCPN today, we load both charts. The logic is that if you use groups sorted by Region, say, you want the small scale duplicates to appear in each Region. As a result of this logic, when you show "all Available Charts" group you will see duplicates in the chart selector bar. This is confusing. Try it and you will see.

Alternatively, we could elect not to load duplicates. But that might break someone's idea of Group layout by Region/directory.

I prefer not to bring up a cryptic dialog while loading, asking the user what policy they want. Loading charts is an area where novices get bogged down pretty quickly. Talking of groups and duplicates perhaps minutes after they have installed O for the first time will be "not friendly". We should choose a policy and just do it quietly.

So, what say ye?

Thanks
Dave

I don't see a reason to change, see screenshot, mouse over tells me from which directory a chart is from.

Too late to edit my own post.

Additional observation: This only happens with OpenGL=On (linux x64 with nvidia GTX650 card and nvidia-drivers)

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2330 Released

Hey there...

Another specific test request:

Considering fonts...
We want to determine if users upgrading from a font-customized installation of OCPN 3.2.x will experience font difficulties on upgrade to OCPN 4.0

1. Delete your opencpn.ini file.
2. Install and run OCPN 3.2.x, if you still have it.
3. Adjust the fonts to some useful, recognizable size/face.
4. Close OCPN 3.2.x
5. Start OCPN 3.3.2330.
6. Examine the fonts.

Question: Are they too big/small/odd?

I have run this test on XP, no problems. But YMMV, since each system generally has a different font set available. Windows' idea of default seems occasionally random.

Report results here, with pix.

Thanks
Dave

Gerhard...

re:
"The last commit of today "Correct a small but persistent memory leak in OCPNRegion dtor." doesn't help much. There are still memory leaks with OCPNRegion here."

Are you certain you have a fresh build?
I can reproduce your leaks on original 3.3.2330. But with the recent build, I see only a very small malloc leak, still to be fixed.

Thanks
Dave

Or make a back-up (a re-named copy) of the file AND of the CHRTLIST.DAT file and then follow Dave's recipe

You will find those buttons in "Properties" for routes and tracks, not directly in the route manager.

A bit of thread drift here...
If we for a moment assume that you were right in your post....
Can you please explain why you think that over zooming is necessary in the entrance to the Panama canal?
Here is a picture in zoom 1.1

I certainly get all the info I expect from a chart here. Also ..... entering a busy harbor entrance I would be looking at other things than a screen.

I think you guys are coming up with strange examples where over zooming is necessary.

Lady Musgrave Island and ... for example the approaches to the bridge on the French side in St Martin are more relevant.

Hi Thomas,
I am in the properties window for the route, and the buttons are not where they used to be.

Lars...
I probably see your problem and it certainly is a bug. To recover the buttons now, just make the window bigger...

Hi Pavel,

It is correct. As soon as I make the window larger, it is there. Thanks for your help.

That doesn't matter. Memory leaks should be avoided in any circumstances. I use Instruments with Xcode for checking but I have heard there exists Valgrind for other OS.
