Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2316 Released

Folks...

Slow down, now.

This is just about getting the name right on initial contact. Nothing else. We have no plans to construct a database of worldwide AIS targets, their size, their picture, their last port, etc. That tool is elsewhere available. Or could be a nice PlugIn.

The name will do for OCPN. 99.999% of the time, the name in the CSV file will be right. If it is not, we should update it on the first valid static data message.

And that's all.

If it becomes too complicated, we'll just remove the feature and defer until the next+1 OCPN version in late spring. We can only do so much at one time.

Dave...

Dirk and myself we are joking.

Would be nonsense to build up a MMSI data base. I'm with you.

In the feature request there was the option to have the data just for the session - that's when it is interesting to get the data back when lost in a difficult reception situation.

The other point is how to mark that AIS target: green point, green bow...

And yes, perhaps you should make a call for a feature freeze.
Priorities, ideas we have a lot more.

Dave etal,

I had just discovered this new feature before it was brought up in this thread.

I like the idea for this feature, but I am not sure how practical it is in its current form. As I see it this is useful if you are sailing in a local area and you want to be able to determine the name of a contact before you receive a static message from the contact. This would also be good in an area with a lot of ferry traffic.

Lets say I want to enter a friends boat with an option to always track. I need to open an AIS target query or the AIS target list in order to read his MMSI. Then I have to open Options > ships >MMSI Properties – new and enter the MMSI. OpenCPN will then store the MMSI and name for future reference. Would it not be more practical and efficient to have a button to add the MMSI (and select options) from either the AIS Target List or from the AIS Target Query?

The ignore and MOB options make sense to me, but out of curiosity, why one would want to convert AIVDM to AIVDO for an MMSI? Is an AIVDM message another ships message and does not an AIVDO contain my ships data. Would this cause OpenCPN to use that data to place the own ship icon?

I think the best thing is for all static data to be cached. (Type, dimensions, etc.) Then there is no need for a new colour.

Green should be reserved for targets with full information available, including current draft, destination and ETA, that are not static, nor are the included for a "yellow" target.
I think that a dark blue color would be OK for the intermediate state.

Dave,

Rick is not the culprit, has been me.

As far as I have seen the list is accumulative not just the session, so it will grow over the time.
At busy places like ours here or Thomas listening to the Baltic feed this will heap up to a 4 digit number in not that long time.

And for sure we will try to break it, that's the only thing we are good for!

Hubert
Shucks I thought I was being included in good company! Now I've been found out.

Yes, you're right. I hadn't thought about destination and ETA.

I wonder if it might be better to have a dark green and a light green, or halfway from yellow to green - to convey the idea that half the data is available. Blue seems somehow unrelated.

VDM is AIS data from other vessels
VDO is AIS data from your own vessel

Both the VDM & VDO sentences in that capture are from mmsi=512001521, I have to assume that is you.

I'm not sure of the protocol details, conceivably, VDO could cancel VDM, but I doubt that as it seems like a waste of bandwidth. I would have to capture a working network to see if both VDO and VDM are sent for 'own' vessel, that'll take a few days.

seems to me that OPENCPN gets your vessel MMSI from AIVDO, and will/should then ignore the AIVDM with your MMSI.

Choon...You are partially correct.
AIVDO messages relate to "Ownship", AIVDM to other ships.

OpenCPN uses AIVDO for ownship positioning, if available, and uses AIVDM for AIS target tracking.

Dave
You can also look up Tracker AIS Feature Requests to find the item.
But could not find it in this search

Note that AIS "Persistent Vessel Names" should not change
"Usual aging and removal rules...." whatever they are.

Finally, in answer to your question, there is of course, the excellent Opencpn Manual, why had I not thought of it? I guess we should be using these resources more!

Setting Options | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Quote:
Convert AIVDM to AIVDO for this MMSI
AIVDM NMEA 0183 sentence -> AIS position reports from other vessels
AIVDO NMEA 0183 sentence -> AIS position reports from own vessel

The setting is intended for at least the following very specific scenario:
1. You have an AIS transponder, not connected to your computer.
2. You have a separate AIS receiver, used to monitor your own AIS signal, as well as all other traffic.
3. You desire not to collide with yourself, virtually. So you instruct O to convert the AIVDM
for your MMSI coming in via your AIS receiver into AIVDO, or "ownship". Thus, no collision. O may, however, also use this converted AIVDO for ownship position if enabled in the connections dialog.
There may be other uses for this VDM->VDO conversion.
It also occurs to me that if we make a whole lot of changes to the Options / Preferences the manual will need to be changed as well, so there is some work doing that too. I would not let this get in the way of having the Options interface organized well however.

[I'm agnostic about Options/Preferences, Jesper might have some thoughts... as he (maybe we) changed it from "Settings" I believe when Jesper worked a number of months on the current interface, while he was in Ushuaia

Hey guys...

I'm not an artist...

But, here is a live shot of the new AIS target color, name coming from cache. See that little off-green AIS/B target in the marina?

Anyone have serious objections to this color? If so, send me RGB co-ordinates and I'll be happy to adjust.

Thanks
Dave

Agree with Hakan, aaff00 these colors show up a little better.
