Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

colemj...

This seems to have popped up with the lastest wxWidgets, or possibly due to Mavericks. Not sure which caused it, but we made no change to O that would possibly have affected the default Apple menu. In fact, we have always just let OsX create that menu automatically.

As you may know, we do not use application-level drop down menus at all in OCPN, by policy.

I will look into this new Mac behaviour....

Dave, ours is Mavericks (10.9.4) and colemj's is 10.8.5
I remember that CarCode complaint about this issue several weeks ago.

Will work on screen shots, but I'm not sure what they will provide in the way of information.. the charts are there when zoomed out.. zoom in and they disappear. But will see what I can do.

As suggested by Hubert I turned off quilting and the problem goes away. I can zoom in on the raster charts.

I don't think it is Antarctic specific, but that is just where I have useful raster charts.........

The Mac version 3.3.1931 from opencpn.org had included wxWidgets 2.9.5 and wxWidgets 3.0.0 while the Mac version 3.3.2107 from opencpn.org has included wxWidgets 3.0.0 only now.
The latest code from github for 3.3.2107 is however not optimized for wxWidgets 3.0.0. Maybe it compiles with command-line gcc but not with Xcode and clang.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

Dave...
I think that the phenomena Chris and others describe is what I captured on a video to be shortly available at https://vimeo.com/106011159 - The action recorded is zooming in on US81071_2 using mouse wheel (but can reproduce even using keyboard). Notice the basechart kicking in at 175900 scale - To make it funny, in case I'm not recording the screencast, I get stuck there and it is not possible to zoom further in.
At least for me the basechart kicks in with any settings, but I get stuck (until I move a chart slightly) at 175900 only with OpenGL enabled.

Another observation related to mouse wheel zooming, this time with OpenGL disabled - The viewport "jumps" slightly with every zoom step while having "Zoom to cursor" enabled - https://vimeo.com/106012752

Would you mind posting the errors you get?

Thanks

That description sounds very similar but I don't have the bandwidth to view videos I'm afraid.

The phenomena occurs with and without OGL in my case.

I confirm that the effect occurs with both scroll wheel on the mouse and with keyboard +/- keys.

I'm on Windows 7 64 bit. OCPN download from the OCPN.org download page.

perserving zoom ratio seems to do funny things, as does quilting but I can't quite put my finger on what is happening.

I'm attaching a couple of 7zipped charts disguised as a video.. change the extension.

In both Ubuntu Precise and Debian Wheezy the default ownship icon fails to display in the non-OpenGL mode, but displays fine in the OpenGL mode. Anyone else experiencing this problem or have a clue as to a possible explanation? Was never a problem until I enabled OpenGL and then switched back to non-OpenGL mode.

Nope, it works just fine for me. How does the failure look? Maybe a screenshot would give us some clue.

The first image is with OpenGL active, second inactive. First time I've viewed screenshots for comparison, and there's obviously more going on than just display of the ownship.

Thanks. Just to be sure - no ownship.png in your UserIcons directory?

Here is something about zooming out that does not work in Climatology using opengl features. using dell xps 15 inspiron laptop, w/nvidia geforce 540m, with opengl accel turned on with texture caching checked.
Climatolgy - Air temp, precip, cloud cover, sea depth all act strange and look funny when zoomed out. When zoomed in they work fine and as expected.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

Folks...

After a round of crash dump analysis, I make some observations:

1. For those using Intel GMA graphics on Windows (a large number, I understand), I note that the variety of ways that the Intel OpenGL driver fails catastrophically is, well, simply wondrous. We will need to detect this driver environment, and further clip its wings by not asking it to do anything very complicated at all. This will, sadly, reduce performance somewhat.
Interestingly, the recent failures have to do with something called VBOs, which have been in the OpenGL spec for years. They work in these drivers mostly, but occasionally just crash for no apparent reason. Probably due to (mis)management of the shared common memory pool. These chipsets do not usually have dedicated graphics memory....

But we understand that this is probably the most widely available portable platform in distribution, so we must support it at some minimal level.

Its too bad, really, that Intel cannot seem to catch up...

2. The Vector Chart Object Search PlugIn from nohal now has a known problem on shutdown of OpenCPN. It crashes regularly.
Pavel and I are working on this. Stay tuned.

Thanks for your support.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

More info on Overzoom. This is a strange problem. Overzoom works in some places and not in others. For example, on CM93 charts, if you go to the area of Waikiki Beach(Ali Wai Harbor), Island Oahu in Hawaii, overzoom works correctly. If you go to Hilo Bay on the big island of Hawaii, it does not. Tried this with quilting enabled and disabled and it made no difference

Also noticed that chart outlines are not visible with quilting enabled.

Windows 7 32 bit.
