Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

Testers...
The packages for all platforms are now available on the download page.

With this version come substantial changes in the way we create packages for Ubuntu/Debian Linux. The package was split into several components to save bandwidth needed for installation and allow much higher customizability of your installation. As a bonus, the high resolution world base chart can now be installed easily from a package.

The following packages are now available:
opencpn (Base program, grib and dashboard plug-ins, GUI data, 4 MB)
opencpn-doc (Documentation, 18 MB)
opencpn-tcdata (Tide and current data, 700 KB)
opencpn-gshhs-crude (World basechart, 25 km resolution, 800 KB)
opencpn-gshhs-low (World basechart, 5.0 km resolution, 1.5 MB)
opencpn-gshhs-intermediate (World basechart, 1.0 km resolution, 4 MB)
opencpn-gshhs-high (World basechart, 0.2 km resolution, 12MB)
opencpn-gshhs-full (World basechart, 0.04 km resolution, 50MB)
Note that each higher resolution GSHHS chart depends on all the lower resolution ones, so you have to sum all the sizes to estimate the download size

With this version, the dependency of the main program on the data packages is optional, which means that if you install just the opencpn package and nothing else, you will not have any basemap, documentation or tidal data available. I'm looking for comments regarding the dependencies. Should we enforce the base program dependency on the documentation and some subset of data? It will mean a larger download at least once, but at the other hand the experience for users not reading the instructions, which probably is very close to 100%, will be "better"...

What do you think?

To get the same set of data as bundled in the monolithic packages for the previous versions up to 3.3.1931, you can either use the following command
Code:
sudo apt-get install opencpn opencpn-doc opencpn-tcdata opencpn-gshhs-low
or install the respective packages using your favorite package managing GUI

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

At least it seems to be stable now (this morning) with OpenGL, playing a VDR file.
With latest commits from Friday, when turning OpenGL on, it crashed every now and then, longest it survived was ~ 45 minutes ...
But it was stable sailing all day yesterday with OpenGL off.
Framebuffer issue for Intel onboard graphics drivers seems to be fixed now.

I discovered 2 issues :
  • sometimes it hangs pretty much when zooming in/out, up to 10 secs delay with OpenGL on.
  • I cannot overzoom anymore in most of the places ... ?
See the 2 screenshots from the harbour of Caorle, northern adriatic sea:
Full overzoom is with 3.3.1606, the other one is the maximum I can zoom in with 3.3.2107.
Is there a new setting ? I didn't find anything in the options ...

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

First trial with 2107

Installs fine
When opening the tools menu, choosing OpenGL, all options in the OpenGL option menu is greyed out.
After exiting the tools menu, entering again, one of the options are possible to choose, the other two greyed out.
Finally, after opening the tools menu a third time, all three options are available.

But now, when exiting the tools menu, and trying to enter again, the appended screenshot window appears when I click on the tool button.
Also, OpenCPN hangs. Not possible to exit. Got an "Application not responding " warning when trying to choose and close it using Windows task manager.

A screenshots and the log is attached.

I have replicated the same behavior a few times.

-Start Ocpn
-Click tools
-Click ok on the "No charts installed dialogue"
-choose "accelerated graphics (opengl)"
-choose options
-choose "texture compressions with caching"
(the other two options greyed out)
Clicking apply (but not exiting the tools menu) does not make the grey outs disappear)
-close the dialogue, open again
Now all three options are possible to choose
-If I choose all three and click ok I get back to opencpn.
-If I click the tools icon, I get the attached screenshot and opencpn hangs.

Maybe Opencpn starts doing stuff in the background, but it does not behave "nicely".

System Win7-64 up to date. No charts. More details on request.

O "stopped working" after 4 or 5 minutes while swapping from OpenGL on/off/on - crash report sent. Dell D630 laptop with Windows 7 Ult 64-bit.

With OpenGL on, some elements - dashed lines - are drawn mirrored up/down. Also there is extra text with OpenGL on. The attachments show an example of the differences between OpenGL off/on

hoolie...

This is very strange. Works fine for me, see image attached.

What are your vector chart settings?

Anyone else see this phenomenon?

Thanks

When it sometimes hangs for 10 seconds, what type of chart is shown. What are OpenGL options?

Thanks

It seems since the so called "optimizations" from Sean D'Epagnier OpenCPN does not run as before. Why it is not possible to discard them?

Gerhard....

You are obviously able to build from source for Mac. So feel free to fork from github and backport all of the functional improvements to 3.2.2 that you like. Publish if you want to. It is all FOSS.

Meanwhile, we will carry on here. The only viable cross-platform route to significant performance improvement is OpenGL, and that is the focus of 3.3.

Very nicely thought out. Thank you.
Perhaps include the Tidal Data 700kb and the Crude ghhs 800kb (perhaps even Low) in the "Base" so that those features work without too much impact on download times. Also it would simplify the options a little and leave the selections that make the most difference as options.
-----
Pavel since you have Win install for 3.3.2107 here Download OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage
perhaps I should delete the full install setup on Opencpn Beta file thing?
----
For Example to compile the package for windows with Tidal & Current and with Ghhs Crude execute:
cmake -dbundle_gshhs=crude -dbundle_tide=on ..
cmake --build . --config release --
cpack
From this Developer page
NSIS Modularized Packaging Commands | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Does it matter if it is caps or not?

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2107 Released

Rick...
You don't have to use it at all - on Windows the package containing everything is still the default as the OS lacks software management capabilities and we didn't implement our own solution in NSIS yet.
And yes, where I write capitals you should use capitals.
