Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1303 Released

I have an old feature request FS#205 : WP .jpg Chart Ability to display pictures belonging to charts. . An argument could be made that this is a bug, as not all the available information belonging to the charts are presented.

Many inland ENC charts have pictures and drawings of bridges and other features included in the chart file. US IENC chart U37AG001, "Allegheny River System", for example have 21 included pictures to aid navigators. One example here.

A user of OpenCPN is in no way currently made aware of the existence of this useful aid to navigation.
A natural way to include the information would be to have an official "info icon" near the target. This icon would only be available if zoomed in to a relatively large scale, to avoid clutter. Double clicking this would show the picture in the "Object Query" dialog.

I should probably mention something about this patch which Dave kindly integrated. There was some discussion about this when it was proposed as a feature. The beta wiki has now been updated to reflect the update. If anyone's interested in the details of why I think multicast UDP is a better approach to distributing nmea-0183 over an IPv4 network than tcp or broadcast udp, I've written a totally biased piece about it here. YMMV :-)

This doesn't really affect anyone who isn't interested: There's no performance or functional impact on existing set-ups. In practice any benefits from using multicast udp over any other method of data distribution will be so small as to be unnoticeable on the average boat network. There's also very little out there which supports it right now, although this has to date been a vicious circle. Hopefully this is a step to breaking that and I've mailed a few vendors to ask about adding support.

If you know of any products which work with nmea-0183 over multicast udp do please post. If anyone (other than me :-) could test that this works for them (on mac especially) that would be great. Note obviously that if you fancy doing multicast but you still need broadcast to support some applications, forget the multicast: you'll pointlessly double the data on your network.

This probably isn't a problem with this release, but, I'm getting errors with ENC's for District 1 north of Cape Cod, that result in greyed out areas as seen in the attached screen shotClick image for larger version

I have really tried to repeat your scenario, but can't.
Looking at your screen dumps, with the lack of details along the coast, I suspect that, not all charts are loaded or available in your setup.

I've downloaded a new copy of district 1 and done a full database rebuild. Same problem occurs when moving up the coast at scale=185100. When I center the screen again, the grey disappears and the charts "look" OK.

To be honest I don't really care about these charts, I use CM93 or raster. If anyone else is having the problem I'll chase it further.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1303 Released

CarCode...

Regarding:

Code:
There is no context menu "Weather Table" in the downloaded 3.3.1303 Mac version. However in the downloaded Windows version 3.3.1303 this context menu shows up when grib plugin is activated.
This was clearly caused by a build coherency problem on my Mac build machine. The wrong (earlier) version of the GRIB PlugIn got bundled, instead of the current github source. You can see a big difference in the file sizes of the GRIB dylib between a current build, and the 3.3.1303 contents.

Sorry for the mixup.

I have no trouble with crashing on exit after a Weather Table display. Are you still having this trouble?

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1303 Released

Dave,

only after opening and closing the weather table and then closing OCPN I get this crash:

Code:
Thread 0 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
0   libgrib_pi.dylib    0x0000000117be85b5 GribRecord::getInterpolatedValue(double, double, bool) const + 37
1   libgrib_pi.dylib    0x0000000117bc16e4 GRIBUIDialog::UpdateTrackingControls() + 148
2   libgrib_pi.dylib    0x0000000117bc1641 GRIBUIDialog::SetCursorLatLon(double, double) + 97
3   libgrib_pi.dylib    0x0000000117b87273 grib_pi::SetCursorLatLon(double, double) + 67
4   opencpn             0x000000010cf0739d PlugInManager::SendCursorLatLonToAllPlugIns(double, double) + 189 (pluginmanager.cpp:879)
5   opencpn             0x000000010cccad7f ChartCanvas::MouseEvent(wxMouseEvent&) + 3615 (chcanv.cpp:5505)
6   opencpn             0x000000010cd2acb3 glChartCanvas::MouseEvent(wxMouseEvent&) + 35 (glChartCanvas.cpp:437)
A very short flash of the wx assert window shows something about a problem with grid lines in the weather table but I was not able to save its contents, too short flash...

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1303 Released

Hello testers...

A little request, please....
Anyone able to check uploading routes to Garmin GPS?

See FS#1211 : RM 3.3.1006 won't upload routes to GPS

Thanks

Dave..
I've tested on a Garmin 12 with no succes.
During the test there was also a crash occurrence and the report is sent. But I couldn't repeat it so I think it was a mix up in my settings for the port. Actually I've never used this Garmin communication before.
Log file extract:
Code:

The connection works as NMEA source after I've changed back to NMEA. Also verified by the log extract above. And I've tried to send a WP to the GPS and read the settings using another pgm and that was successful. See capture.

Hakan/wdkester...

OK, thanks for the reports. I see the bug now. Happens only on Windows, and came about when we added extended port description field to the upload port selection dialog.

Fixed for next Beta.

Thanks

Looking forward to seeing it. FYI, I've never been able to get Garmin route uploads to work on any release version. (Haven't tested this with betas.) I always assumed it was because my Garmin is a USB device, not serial. There is such a wide array of different Garmin devices, some USB, some true NMEA serial, I just assumed that my Oregon 400c was an oddball, and used Mapsource and (more recently) Homeport to upload my routes.

I'd love to be able to do this directly out of O, since I create all my routes with it. I also use O in the cockpit as my primary device, but keep the Garmin for weatherproof standby device, and for recording all my tracks.

I'll try this out as soon as your new beta hits the web.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1303 Released

RD...

Once more, you are my extreme config tester.

The patch above relates only to RS232 serial interfaced Garmin devices.
Does not relate to USB.

We have good code for Garmin USB devices in 3.3.1303, though it has been a long time since it was tested in any controlled way. It worked at one time.

I don't have a Garmin USB device except a GPS-18 puck, which does not allow route uploads. (no UI on the device, so that seems reasonable...)

So, what happens when you try an upload to USB Garmin on the current 3.3.1303 code?

Dave, I have the GPS-18x puck on my boat, so I know what you're talking about. No reason to upload routes to a puck with no chartplotting capability.

Since you sounded interested in seeing the results, I tried uploading to the Oregon 400c USB handheld again tonight. I did it twice, first time with the "Use Garmin (host) mode for uploads" checked, second time without it. It failed both times. I also tried it in Mass Storage mode (total failure) and GPS mode (successfully identified in in the log file, but failed to upload). Here are the logs for the latter case:

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.1303 Released

RD....

According to this Garmin serial/USB protocol (garmin), the Garmin 400c can only upload routes/marks as GPX files in Mass Storage mode. It does not support GRMN mode serial or USB uploads.

However....
You should be able to export the routes from OCPN, and then import to the 400c in Mass Storage mode.

Does this work at all?

As a test, maybe you could manually make a route on the 400c, and export it from the device, saving to your PC. We could then compare the Garmin GPX file to something similar from OCPN, looking for significant tag/key differences.
