Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.1.802 Released

I prefer that the MOB button be always available and not optional. If OpenCPN is the only thing available at the moment someone goes over the side then it is best that the MOB button is right were it is expected to be.

Single-handed boats don't need an MOB button...

I am a single handed sailor. However, I have sailed with the wife and kids. Thus, it is easy for me to understand how important crew safety can be. It would be really sad to lose someone because a safety feature was disabled.

Yeah... or they got confused which one is the real important button on a boat with several systems/apps/whatever.

Leave it to the user/skipper, maybe not the crew, how to configure alarms

That's fine with me...which leads to a setting in the config/ini file.
Once an O session is running, it can't be changed.
There are already similar safety settings in there, for example whether to allow extreme over-zooming or not.

A permanent setting is good but settings in the config file without a UI is a really bad practice. We all know people do not RTFM...

So, in an effort to do the impossible (please everybody at the same time) I do the following:

The second choice stores itself permanently in the config file and the choice to remove the button will never be shown again.

Never please everyone. That leads to mediocrity.
Surely, we can make a choice and not blame you for it.
There REMAINS the option to make a mark and GOTO it as well. It is all in the right-click menu. Instant....a mere one click more than the MOB with the advantage you can put it BEHIND you on your track.
-after pitching over the the various floatables with one hand, while steering with the other meanwhile attempting to keep my eye on the hapless daytripper shrivelling with hypothermia in my wake... Will I calmly be letting all go and repair to the NavStation where I engage the MOB button with aplomb....before all the old drill? - that's going to need some re-training.

How can pressing the MOB be the wrong thing to do? It is simply a button that is predefined to quickly place a unique mark on the chart. It is simple to understand and be used by a neophyte. Yet, it can significantly improve the chance of rescuing someone. Sorry, but I just can't image why someone would ever want to give up an option that could save a life.

Maybe moving this a bit off-topic...

What I would really like would be an easy to implement interface with a external push button that would invoke the MOB function in OpenCPN. Preferably at the helm similar to the function in some built-in nav systems.

Here is a place to start:

Teensyduino: Using USB Keyboard with Teensy on the Arduino IDE

If you don't want to start hacking around in an Arduino you can get something like http://www.stealthswitch2.com/products/stealthswitch3/

Sounds like it could be programmed to send the MOB hot-key straight to O

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.1.802 Released

Re-installing 3.1.802 version I realised that now you have started implemeting ship size for AIS. That is a good feetures to implement and of course needs a bit of refining, but you are coming around to what I have been asking for a while. One suggstion is to make show ship shape at an earlier stage upon zoomig. Great job done and thank's very much for doing so. When do you expect to come out with your next version?
Best Regards
